Art Lovers As a little background information on the new showing in the Art Studio, we have learned that two of the artists, Cindi DeWeese and Shellie Bean, first met in an all-media painting group that met on Monday mornings. Since both only painted in watercolor, they felt lucky to be able to schedule a watercolor-only class on Mondays at 1 pm and decided to work as a group of semi-experienced watercolorists, but without a teacher. After several months, some members of the group mentioned they wanted to learn more about watercolor, and as more people heard about their group, seeing them painting, said they wanted to learn more about watercolor painting… but didn't know how to paint. So, they tried having a small five-week beginners' class from 3 to 5 pm to go over the basics. The newcomers had a lot of fun, and several decided to join the 1 pm group. The beginner class has proven to be very popular! It has been offered three times, and their coming spring class is already full. It has proven to be an easy way to learn if you really like watercolor painting or not! Some of today's artists have only been painting for a year and a half; others, for as little as a month. We can all appreciate their hidden talent, and we welcome you to come see their work in their first show in the Art Studio. 26 | OHCC LIVING | FEBRUARY 2023 | Art Room We hope that you joined or rejoined the club or clubs of your choice on Do Dues Day. Don't worry, you can still join by leaving your check made out to the clubs at the front desk of the Clubhouse. There are many clubs and activities of every kind to meet the interests of our OHCC residents. We are very fortunate that there are so many art venues within a short distance that the Art Lovers Club can visit. First is the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana. The Bowers Museum first opened its doors in 1936 as a city-run museum devoted primarily to the history of Orange County. In 1987, the city of Santa Ana closed the museum to be totally transformed to meet the challenges of the new century. In October of 1992, the Bowers Museum, now six times larger than the original museum, reopened its doors. Since this highly successful reopening, the museum has presented over 150 special exhibitions from all over the world and opened six permanent galleries. One of the most exciting exhibitions features the fantasy world of couture art by Guo Pei. Pei, a world-renowned designer herself has gathered her finest and most personal pieces which demonstrate why she is known as China's "Queen of Couture." Her gowns are truly magical. Other exhibits at the Bowers Museum include objects related to the missions and ranchos of early California, collections of Native American art and artifacts, and paintings featuring California's visual history. Each painting epitomizes California's land, people and offerings as a place of produce and plenty. The Oceanside Museum of Art is always one of our favorite places to peruse with its thoughtfully curated art works and knowledgeable docents. Other galleries we enjoy are the William Cannon Gallery in Carlsbad, The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, and The Fallbrook Art Center which will be presenting their 14th Annual World of Watercolor Show. Of course, a trip to Balboa Park is a must with its wealth of galleries and museums including The San Diego Art Institute, San Diego Museum of Art, The Timkin Museum of Art, the Mingei International Museum and Spanish Village, a 20th Century depiction of an old village in Spain. It houses artist's studios among a colorful patio. We hope you can join us on some of these trips. Please call Susan Pick at (760) 305-8907 or erniepick@netzero.net for more information.
