40 | OHCC LIVING | FEBRUARY 2023 | Swim & Wellness Club Coach Waterman Meet club member Patti Waterman. Patti's three older brothers were all swimmers, so it was natural for her to follow in their swim fins. She won her first medal at age seven. In high school, she made All-American at the National Championships, and qualified for the Olympic trials at age 17. Patti went on to swim all four years for San Diego State University. After earning bachelor's and master's degrees, she spent 35 years as a college professor, teaching Health and Kinesiology at both Imperial Valley College and Palomar College. At the time, men's sports were dominant and very few colleges had programs for women. Patti was instrumental in bringing women's sports to both colleges and started programs for four different women's sports. She also became the Women's Swim coach and took swimmers to the state championships every year that she coached. Her teams won nine conference championships and she was named "Coach of the Year" three times. Patti and husband John have been married for 43 years, and they joke that Patti was searching for the man with the right last name. They have three daughters and six grandchildren. Moving to OHCC in 2020, Patti says that living here is "a joy." In addition to swimming, Patti also golfs, plays pickleball, and is a member of SERT and the Save the Butterfly Club. Patti is just one of our talented members who volunteers to teach FREE swim lessons. Will 2023 be the year that YOU learn to swim? Instruction is tailored to the individual and can range from teaching folks who are water-phobic to those with advanced skills. We have both male and female instructors.
