6 | OHCC LIVING | FEBRUARY 2023 | Show your important documents some love for Valentine's Day! • When was the last time you reviewed your documents? • Do you have them stored in one place or several places? • Does your family, attorney, and/or executor know where these documents are stored? In a recent article in the AARP Bulletin, they recommend establishing three categories: Tier 1 – Essential Life Documents - these require top-level care • Social Security Card • Passport • Will/Trust • Healthcare proxy and/or directive • Birth Certificate • Marriage Certificate • Car title (pink slip) • Home Deed • Divorce papers Tier 2 – Important References - stored for ease of access • 401(k) or IRA statements • Life Insurance policies • Tax returns (3-7 years) both Federal and State Tier 3 – Quick Access – should be carried with you • Driver's license or other State issued ID • Health Insurance The article recommends storing essential life documents in a fireproof safe or a bank safe-deposit box. It also spoke about backing up your documents electronically either by scanning them or taking a picture of them. One thing that I felt was missing in this article was a list of your medical conditions and medications. Personally, I would categorize this as Tier 3 – Quick Access documents. Recently one of our SERT members was in an auto accident and was transported to the emergency room. The emergency responders were able to access her medical records from her smart phone and by the time she arrived at the hospital the doctors were in a much better position to treat her. You never know when you will need your medical information. The Vial of Life form is a very good place to start. Keep a copy by your refrigerator, a digital copy on your smart device, and a reduced sized copy in your wallet. The SERT Club is an organization dedicated to promoting safety within OHCC.
