She was 85 years old. Gail was born in Borger, Texas in 1937. Her parents were Hubert and Catherine Berry. Gail had two older siblings and her family was close. She was married to Bill Hodge of Sun Lakes, who passed away in 2018. During her childhood, Gail's father worked for a petroleum company and they moved around Texas every few years with this job. After high school, she moved to Los Angeles in 1958 and worked as a waitress, secretary, bookkeeper. Her favorite job was working 15 years at Universal Studios in the Property Dept as an administrative assistant. Gail moved to Banning in 2001 after marrying Bill Hodge. They enjoyed the resort lifestyle, living on a golf course, and often participated in the social offerings. The dances were her favorite events. Her COPD/Emphysema worsened when she moved to Carlsbad to live at sea level to improve her breathing. Gail leaves behind two children, three grandchildren and one great grandson. A private family service will be held in mid-January. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Lung Association on her behalf. Ana Mauney Gauck On December 22, 2022, Ana Maria Scarpitta, also known as Ana Mauney Gauck, passed away, at the age of 100. Born in Puerto Rico, Ana moved to Chicago with her mother and eight siblings. Ana started first grade speaking only Spanish. As a teenager, Ana discovered her talent to sing and model. At 20, Ana was doing comedy skits with other entertainers including with a well-known vaudeville show at Harry's New Yorker. Ana became a pinup girl for GIs in the military. When she was 21, Ana left for Hollywood and found agents interested in her. With others, she entertained the troops through the USO at Camp Roberts and Camp David in California. Ana was especially known for her rendition of Mama Yo Quiero (I Want My Mama) in the style of the famed Carmen Miranda. For a short time, she used the stage name of Dahlia Brooks. Working at the famous Hollywood Canteen, she danced with and supported the servicemen. There she met Guy Scarpitta. After just one dance, they fell in love. Their marriage lasted until Guy died in 1978. They raised four children. Their 1940s story is told in a chapter of the book, The Cartainos: Men of Passion • Men of Stone (2022). It contains additional photos of Ana. Ana had a nearly 20-year career working as a real estate agent for Coldwell Banker. In the early 1980s, she married Gene Mauney and also welcomed his son, George. In 1991, Gene and Ana moved to Sun Lakes. Gene died in 1993. Ana remained single for a time before marrying George Gauck. George died in 2005. Ana's Catholic faith was important to her throughout her life. She joined the Carmelite community in Redlands. She was also a member of the Catholic Daughters and more. Ana continued living her Catholic faith serving her parish of St. Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Church in Beaumont. Surviving Ana are her children: Stephen, Michael, Gerald, and Annette. Also surviving are her five grandchildren, Adam, John, Michael, Matthew, and Kamilla. Carrying her into the future will be two great-grandchildren, Fallon and Landon and also Sunny — with another on the way. On January 12, 2023, Ana was interred at the San Fernando Mission Cemetery in Mission Hills, California. She is buried next to Guy.
