It's February, traditionally the month for love and all things heart related. In 1963, the annual celebration began to encourage Americans to the fight against heart disease and in 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson, who was among the millions of people in the country who'd had heart attacks, issued the first proclamation. But still with all the attention, information, and preventive measures, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States… one in every five deaths. Why when it is the most preventable disease?! According to the National Institute on Aging, people 65 and older are more likely than younger people to suffer from heart disease. Not only is it a leading cause of death but heart disease is also a major cause of disability, limiting the activity and eroding the quality of life of millions of older people. If you are in this 20 percent of the population, it is important for you to have your health and medical information readily available. When you moved into Sun Lakes you received a packet of forms protected in a magnetic envelope. This is your File of Life and it is very important because it should be completed with your health and medication information. The last thing we anticipate is a medical emergency but if and/or when one happens the first responders will need your spouse, partners, or your medical information. As the first responders arrive, you may not be able to answer the very important questions they need to have to perform the needed assistance. This is where the File of Life comes into effect. All first responders (police, fire, paramedics…), in our area know about the File of Life and will ask or look for it upon entering your home in an emergency. It is very important to have all information completed on the forms and placed where it is easily accessible. The best place to keep your File of Life is on your refrigerator. Equally important is to keep the information on your File of Life current. When your health or medication change, you should revise the information on your File of Life card. If you cannot make clear changes on your card, a new File of Life information card may be obtained by contacting your EPAP District Coordinator, visiting the front desk at the Main Clubhouse, or calling the EPAP office at (951) 524-3126. When completing the File of Life, make sure there is a separate File for each person living in your home. Be sure to print clearly and complete all the information. If you run out of room, you can add a separate sheet of paper with your additional medical history and medication (prescriptions, over the counter and/or supplements should be listed) to the File of Life envelope. 8 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | FEBRUARY 2023 | EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS In order to alleviate the traffic on Highland Springs, pneumatic tubes will be installed at the Main Clubhouse to transport residents to various locations in the Pass Area. The pneumatic transport will hold 20 people and approximate times of delivery vary depending on the destination. The following times are estimates: Wal-Mart, 3 seconds; Wendy's, 4 seconds; San Gorgonio Hospital, 4.5 seconds; Downtown Banning, 8 seconds. A tube system will be built over the course of the next two years under homes, businesses, and roads in Banning and Beaumont.
