24 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | MARCH 2023 Emergency Water Storage You need one gallon of water per person per day. The minimum is three days storage; the optimum is 14 days storage. We will be discussing how to obtain and store your emergency water. There are two ways to obtain drinking water. The first is to purchase commercially bottled water. The second is to fill your own bottles. If you fill your own bottles you should change them every six months. Sick persons, pregnant women, and small children may need additional water. If you do not buy your water, there are three ways to make it safe. You can boil it, disinfect it, or you can distill it if no clean water is readily available. You must be sure that your water containers are safe: make sure that they can tightly seal, they are not made of breakable glass, or are containers that held toxic solids or liquid chemicals like bleach or pesticides. Do not use plastic or cardboard jugs. Your storage containers must be washed, rinsed, and sanitized. 1. Wash with dish washing soap and rinse with clean water. 2. Sanitize them using one teaspoon of unscented liquid bleach in one quart of water. 3. Place the lid on the container and shake it up thoroughly so that it covers all of the storage container. 4. Wait 30 seconds and empty the sanitizer from the container. 5. Let the container air dry or rinse the container with clean, safe water that is readily available. Proper Water Storage 1. Date and label your stored water. 2. Replace commercially bottled water every six months. 3. Store your water in a cool and dry place. 4. Do not store your water containers in direct sunlight. 5. Do not store water near toxic substances or pesticides. Parts of this article were taken from the CDC's article on Emergency Water Storage. We meet on the third Tuesday of the month. Our next meeting will be held on March 21 at 10 am in the RCN Conference Room. ~ Michael A. Mendoza, srmendoza@verizon.net Emergency Preparedness Committee Hi, my name is Reyna, and I am such a lucky girl! I live in the most wonderful place possible for a dog. Not only do we have beautiful walking trails with the most interesting smells, but we have a doggie park. My mom takes me there each Saturday or Sunday morning at 9 am to meet up with my friends. We get to chase balls (and each other) and stretch our legs. It is just so much fun! Our parents seem to enjoy it too. They are talking and enjoying one another's company, all while watching us play. I was so happy after the heavy rains that the dog park finally dried enough to let us run with our friends again. Being free to run is just the best exercise and I go home very tired and hungry. And, did you know that once you are a member, you can go any day, any time from 7 am to dusk? Your parents can also set play dates with your friends. I heard our parents talking and they are going to have an open house at the Canine Corral for other dog parents to come visit (without their dogs) to see how much fun we have together and how well we all get along. Maybe then they will join and I will have even more friends. Save the date: Saturday, April 29 from 1 to 3 pm. Hope to see you there! ~ Reyna, for my mom, Martha Franck (marthafranck@icloud. com) Canine Corral Council
