FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | MARCH 2023 43 Classic Film Group Rope, a psychological crime thriller and the first film Alfred Hitchcock made in color starring James Stewart will be presented on March and April 4 at 6 pm in The Lodge Theater. In this movie, flatmates Brandon (John Dall) and Philip (Farley Granger) murder former school chum David Kentley (David Hogan) for the thrill of it. Brandon and Philip consider themselves intellectually superior to their friend David, and, as a consequence, decide to murder him. Together they strangle David with a rope and after placing the body in an old chest, they proceed to hold a small dinner party. They invite his family and friends to the party. The guests include David's father(Cedric Hardwicke), his fiancée Janet (Joan Chandler), and their old schoolteacher Rupert, a college professor (James Stewart) whose lectures inadvertently inspired the killing. As Brandon becomes increasingly more daring and the guests grow anxious for the missing boy, one man quietly stumbles onto the truth. Rope was the second of four single-set movies that Hitchcock made and the first use of a single camera in a movie, making it look like it was filmed in a single take. This was James Stewart and Hitchcock's first film of many great movies together. Rope is based on the true crime case of Leopold and Loeb, who committed a murder just to see if they could get away with it. ~ Paul Plamondon, 4seasonsmoviegroup@ gmail.com The club has screenings on the second and fourth Sundays of the month. We screen films you won't find at the big Cineplexes: documentaries, indie films, foreign films, and other little gems that don't get wide release. Due to the Academy Awards broadcast falling on our first screening date in March, there will only be one screening this month. Our screening for the month, on Sunday, March 26 at 6 pm, is the film She Said (USA 2022, 9 hrs. 9 min., English). Here is a brief description from IMDb.com: "New York Times reporters Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor break one of the most important stories in a generation - a story that helped ignite a movement and shattered decades of silence around the subject of sexual assault in Hollywood." All of our screenings are followed by lively discussion about the film; we'd love to have you join us. The Lodge Theater has very limited seating, so if you're interested in our screenings, come early; we hope to see you there. Please note that all films announced are subject to availability. If you have any questions about the Counter Culture Cinema Club or want to recommend a film, please email Micki Rosen at michelesrosen@gmail.com. ~ Micki Rosen Counter Culture Cinema Club
