Over the next few months, we'll review the "five basic rules" of pickleball. One of the nice things about this sport is that it is relatively uncomplicated and simple to play. The first "basic rule" we'll share today is that the ball must stay inbounds. This means the ball must land in the pickleball court or land on the line outlining the court. A ball landing on a line is considered "in." Here is a "code of ethics" for line calls: Only make line calls on your side of the court. Only call a ball "out" when space is clearly visible between ball and line. Make an "out" call promptly by voice or hand gesture. Give the benefit of doubt to your opponents. If you and your partner disagree, ball is considered "in." You may defer to your opponents to make a call, but their call is final. If no one can clearly judge, the ball is considered "in." If you want to learn and play this wonderful game, simply show up. Someone will give you basic instructions and have you playing the same day. Please wear appropriate attire and court shoes. You are also welcome to come observe any time. For more information, feel free to contact either Sue Miller at (503) 702-4273 or Sandy Stearn at (951) 797-0991. We play Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday mornings. We are on winter hours, so we begin around 8:30 am. 44 | LIFE IN SOLERA | MARCH 2023 | PICKLEBALL PADDLERS Pickleball is for everyone.
