| OHCC LIVING | MARCH 2023 | 15 Village Squares The Village Squares club has begun a new class, and what a class it is! We have a group that is very eager to learn, and all are progressing very well. Our caller, Mike Haworth, is moving the class along at an even, relaxed pace, reviewing calls taught and adding a couple of new ones each week. Our "angels," experienced dancers, come each week at 6:30 pm to assist the newcomers in their class time. Then we have plus dancing from 7:30 to 8:30 pm for the more experienced dancers. During this time frame, he will also review calls that dancers are a bit rusty on, but there is plenty of dancing. We have designated the fourth Wednesday of each month as black and white, encouraging members to wear those colors, and having those nights all dancing. Our co-presidents, Steve Ward and Robert Gross, encourage the beginners to use Taminations, a website that shows square dance calls as animations. Using this site reinforces the calls taught at the lessons, and students find it very helpful. Class is now closed, but we invite those who might be interested in a new class to visit and observe any Wednesday at 6:30 pm. Ballroom Dance Join us at our St. Patrick's Day dance that will be held on Fri., March 10 in Abravanel Hall from 7 to 9 pm. We will dance to the music of Hot Pursuit. The cost will be $15/member or $20/non-member. Checks will be due by Fri., March 3. The club sponsors weekly ballroom dance lessons. They are held Wednesdays in Abravanel Hall from 2 to 4 pm. 2 – 2:45 pm Beginner Class 2:45 – 3:15 pm Dance Tips and Techniques for both Beginners and Intermediates 3:15 – 4 pm Intermediate Class The cost for the Beginner or Intermediate class is $10/person per class for both members and non-members. Pay at the door (no reservations required, just come). The Dance Tips and Techniques discussion is open at no charge to both Beginner and Intermediate dancers. These discussions will cover a variety of topics such as lead and follow techniques, body alignment, musicality, etc. Carrie Kloss, a champion dancer and professional instructor provides the dance instruction. She is a Master Examiner for DIVIDA Dance Vision and has many years of experience of providing dance instruction to all levels of dancers from beginners to dance instructors. The dance being taught changes each month. The following is the class schedule through July this year. March, Foxtrot • April, Rumba • May, Waltz • June, Swing • July, Tango. The dance being taught in March is Foxtrot which is very similar to the Waltz. Both are smooth dances characterized by flowing movements that travel around the room in a counterclockwise fashion. The dance combines slow steps and quick steps to create attractive patterns on the dance floor. It is typically danced to big band swing-style music, but it can be danced to many types of popular music. The Lesson Review and Practice Parties are held in Abravanel Hall from 2:30 to 4:30 pm each week on Mondays. Marvin and Lynn Wheeler, who are very experienced dancers, review Wednesday's lessons and provide help upon request. After the review, you can practice your dancing to a variety of ballroom music. The party is FREE, just drop in. These parties are open to all residents of OHCC and guests of members. The annual membership dues for the Ballroom Dance Club are $10 pp. With this membership you will receive regular emails describing club activities as well as discounts for dances. To join, just drop your check off at the front desk. Indicate your email address(s) on the check.
