Make March a Marvelous Month 18 | OHCC LIVING | MARCH 2023 | Recreation News By Chris Bessey, Recreation Director In like a lion and out like a lamb, welcome to March! The club list has added a few more clubs to its roster. We welcome the Matinee Club and the Music Lovers Club. Both of which will be adding articles in this publication, describing their mission and what their plans are for the coming year. Residents are encouraged, if they have an area of expertise, to organize a club. In years past, there was a Ski Club, a Jazz Club, and a Can-Do Club. This year there has been an increase in membership for most of the clubs; with that brings new members with energy, creativity, and enthusiasm. The Recreation Department is seriously looking at new procedures for scheduling, usage, and the total time allotted to all groups. With the help of the Social Club Board, the Community Services Committee, and input from all group types, we hope to come up with some new guidelines for 2024. We have discussed setting up an ad hoc group to review the challenges, as we experience the resurgence of activities, and the renewed energy so many residents are bringing to the Clubhouse. Tickets for "The Swingin' 60s Show" are still available for $45 per person on Sun., March 12. Those who are new to the community will find this to be a fun and informal night with friends and neighbors. Tables of six are available and guests are permitted. Dinner, dessert and soft drinks are included. BYOB to this night of dancing down memory lane. This event is sponsored by the Recreation Department. Doors open for dinner at 6:30 pm. The Spring "Eggstravaganza" Festival, Sat., April 8, is in the planning stages. We always schedule the event the day before the Easter holiday. This will be held on the Golf Course this year, using the surrounding areas to accommodate the numbers. See flyer at right for more details. Bring your cameras, baskets, and a picnic lunch. An ice cream truck will be there for everyone to purchase treats. Make a day of it and splash in the pool from 11 am to 3 pm with your family members. The pool is kept at 84 degrees year-round! The Clubhouse offers many classes, appealing to a wide variety of interests. We welcome new classes and trends, as it is important to keep a recreational program current. For a while, there were goat yoga classes, nationwide, using goats climbing on the backs of all the participants. This is to reduce stress and anxiety. This is because interacting with animals reduces cortisol (the stress hormone) while simultaneously increasing serotonin and dopamine (hormones that trigger happiness). Goat yoga helps you release tension and simply reconnect with everyone around you. Now, that is certainly creative but highly unlikely to be scheduled here, so put it on your bucket list. Some of the classes that continue to gain new members include a Parkinson's support group, a Friday Discussion group, and a Widows group. We appreciate the residents that volunteer to oversee these groups, their dedication is recognized. Please stop by the Clubhouse to get more information about all of our classes. This month brings us to Daylight Saving Time beginning on the morning of March 12. Spring that clock forward, and "If you forget about Daylight Savings, you are going to have a bad time-lol!" The change gives us more time to enjoy the outdoors, the pool and the pop-ups. Go for a walk and take in the beauty of this paradise you all call home!
