6 | OHCC LIVING | MARCH 2023 | Unfortunately, the story that I am sharing is based on something that did happen here in OHCC. A bicyclist was riding along Leisure Village Drive and somehow lost control of their bike and fell. They were found by a resident taking a walk. The biker was conscious and bleeding from their head. The person was not wearing a helmet, had no personal ID, and there was no identification on the bicycle. The person was taken to the hospital as a "John Doe" and subsequently died. The family found the person by pinging their Apple Watch which showed it was located at the hospital. What can we learn from this? Where is the silver lining? Pop Quiz a) Always wear a helmet when riding a bicycle b) Never leave the house without your ID c) Always carry your cell phone or Apple watch d) Be prepared to help someone in an emergency e) All the Above Correct Answer: e) All the Above Now let's take this a step further. • You leave the house to take a walk. • You take your dog for a walk. • You drive your golf cart to the Clubhouse or to visit a friend. Now retake the Quiz. Correct Answers: b), c), d) Now imagine you find somebody lying in the street or in their driveway. What do you do? If they are unconscious, or badly injured, you call 911 or instruct someone to call 911 immediately. Try to assist the individual based on your ability. Are you trained in First Aid and/or CPR? Help the best you can. SERT is always looking for ways to make us all feel safe.
