42 | LIFE IN SOLERA | APRIL 2023 | WHERE DO I LISTEN DURING A "LOCAL" EMERGENCY! The Solera Radio Club is part of the West Riverside County - Amateur Radio Emergency Radio Service (ARES) Division/Banning Pass District. If normal modes of communications fail, we fulfill emergency communication needs for Solera. One of the questions we often hear from residents is "What radio station should I be listening to, if we are in the midst of a catastrophic event?" If you have a Solera Emergency Radio, you just need to dial in to Channel-1 for live and comprehensive information pertinent to Solera. For more information regarding the Solera Emergency Radio system, reach out to us kc6src@gmail.com. Those who do not have our specialized radio can tune in to the nearest AM or FM radio stations for local or regional disaster information broadcasts. The Emergency Alert System (EAS) is a national public warning system commonly used to deliver important emergency information, like weather and AMBER alerts, to affected communities over television and radio. EAS participants – radio and television broadcasters, cable systems, satellite radio and television providers, and wireline video providers – deliver alerts on a voluntary basis, but they are required to deliver Presidential alerts, which enable the President to address the public during a national emergency. Here are a few publicly listed EAS radio stations for or near the San Gorgonio Pass area: • KMET – 1490 AM & 98.1 FM; transmitting from the City of Banning. • KFRG – 95.1 FM, transmitting from the City of San Bernardino. • KNX – 1070 AM, transmitting from the City of Los Angeles (very weak station). TRIVIA ANSWER FOR MARCH: Question: If the election had gone in a different direction this long-time amateur radio operator would have installed a Ham Radio antenna on top of the White House. Who is he? Answer: U.S. Senator Barry Goldwater. Goldwater's association with amateur radio began in his Arizona youth when he constructed his own equipment. Known on the airwaves as K7UGA, Goldwater sponsored legislation to shape the regulation of amateur radio in the United States. During the Vietnam War, Goldwater connected service members in Vietnam with their families in the United States. TRIVIA QUESTION THIS MONTH (Answered next month) This late actor held the call sign KE6PZH and once used his Oscar as a doorstop. Who is it? "When All Else Fails – Think Radio Communications." ~ Ray C. Gayton-Jacob (N6KZM), ray.n6kzm@gmail.com and http://www. soleraradio.com RADIO CLUB
