This is the second in a series of five reviewing the 5 Basic Rules of pickleball. When serving the ball in pickleball, the player in the right had side of the court serves first. They are server #1. As discussed in the February article, each side gets two opportunities to serve. Only the serving side earns points. One of the things that confuses beginning players is that whichever team serves first is only allowed one person (the person in the right-hand court) to serve – until they lose their serve. The other team is allowed both players to serve until serves are lost, then the team who started the game has the opportunity for both players to serve. The game continues that way until over. When serving, the ball must be served underhand – meaning the paddle cannot be above the waist of the person serving. Their teammate (we play doubles in pickleball) must stand behind the back line (baseline) of the court until the ball is served. The served ball must be served to the court diagonally from where they are. In other words, if the server is in the right-hand court, they must serve crosscourt into the right-hand court of the receiving team. Since the serves are crosscourt, the player receiving the serve usually stands well back on their side of the court, while their teammate usually stands well forward (so they can protect the front half of the courts on a short return shot). We will discuss Rule #3 about bouncing balls next month. Come out and watch us play, or better yet, c'mon and join us! You'll get hooked quickly.
