| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | APRIL 2023 | 63 This article, penned during the last week of February, cannot precisely predict the weather conditions of its April readers. It can, however, reflect on what has seemed like a challenging winter season here in the Pass Area, challenging for racquet sports, that is. Often, tennis players here in Sun Lakes have elected some other way to spend a morning rather than deal with cold, wind, rain, and occasional ice. Regardless of the weather, there has been an emerging theme this year for our Tennis Club. It is the increase of activities and events prepared and presented by our Executive Board. For example, on Feb. 18, a retro style Mixer featuring wooden racquets was followed by a lavish potluck dinner. A dozen members took part. Some 30 members enjoyed the delicious meal, complete with some of our favorite foods from yesteryear. The Executive Board has scheduled additional opportunities for skill development beyond our first-of-the-month pre-mixer skill sessions. As indicated in the graphic at right, three Monday evenings remain including April 10. All Sun Lakers are welcome to take part in one or more of the sessions. Each session is limited to 12 participants. Should someone wish to receive individual lessons, contact our Board President, Bill Hendra. His name and number are listed in the Sun Lakes phone book. Bill has also taken the initiative to secure hats and shirts that feature our Sun Lakes Tennis Club logo. The sale of hats and shirts is not new to our club, but does represent an added dimension to this year's level of activity. Finally, here's a Tennis Tip from our tennis pro, Phil Hazelton, a tip fitting for our windy location. According to Phil, in windy conditions, you should do the following: 1st - Ask, what's the direction? 2nd – If the wind is in your face, use hit top spin. 3rd - If the wind is blowing at your back, hit back spin. Keep in mind the wind will bring added player difficulty regardless of skill levels. So, keep in mind the first rule and main purpose in tennis: if you can get to the ball, get it back into play any way you can. As always, keep your eye on the ball and the fun in your game. Tennis
