34 | THE COLONY NEWS | APRIL 2023 | What is paddle tennis? According to the Encyclopedia of Sports, paddle tennis is a racket (paddle) and ball sport that has developed from tennis. The court is smaller than in tennis, requiring faster reactions and the development of net play, and it has no double side lines. The net is lower, and a depressurized tennis ball is used so it does not bounce as much as a regular tennis ball. The origins of paddle tennis can be traced back 100 years to when an Episcopal minister, Frank Peer Bea, from Lower Manhattan wanted to develop recreational activities for the children of the neighborhood. If you are a newcomer to The Colony or if you are interested in learning a new sport, please join us for our free paddle tennis clinic on Thursday, May 11 at 10 am. Contact Ellen Micheli, 951-741-5372, or Karen Nichols, 619-550-8194, for more details and to sign up for the clinic. Paddles will be provided. Our last paddle tennis tournament was a round robin format. Wendell Jackson fought his way through to emerge as the top scorer. Congratulations, Wendell, well done! Thanks to Rob Chandler who was our host for the morning. If you are interested in tennis lessons or would like to brush up on your tennis skills, call John Knitter, 951-805-2456, who offers free ongoing lessons. Racquet Club By Karen Nichols, 619-550-8194 Meet Kathy Love! Kathy has lived in The Colony for 17 years. You may recognize her from her frequent walks around The Colony. But did you know she was the ping pong "playground champ" growing up? Kathy 's family had a ping pong table at home, and she has always enjoyed it. She was excited when the game started up again in The Colony. She continues to improve her skills and says it is a fun way to meet new people and stay active. Plus, she enjoys the friendly competition and camaraderie (and the snacks!). So, come and say hello to Kathy at ping pong. We play every Wednesday from 4 to 6 pm and Friday from 3 to 6 pm in the Annex. We hope to see you there. Ping Pong By Lisa Schrader, 714-814-4543 Round Robin Winner, Wendell Jackson
