56 FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | APRIL 2023
Did you know that about the year 1913, a small group of winter
tourists in Daytona Beach, Florida conceived of the idea of building
courts on land; until that time, shuffleboard was exclusively a
shipboard game. Those early courts were successful, but the growth
of shuffleboard was rather slow, until the end of the 1930s. After
World War II, many improvements in layout, rules, and regulations
began to take place. Shuffleboard clubs were being formed and,
with the formation of recreation departments, there was improved
funding to build new and better courts.
As we welcome in the month of April, the weather has started to
change and that can mean more outdoor activities. What better way
to get some fresh air, exercise, and socialization than to play some
shuffleboard. We play every Monday and Saturday at 9 am on the
courts at The Lodge, located behind the swimming pool and next to
the paddle tennis courts. We now have our own quiet area at which
to play. Shuffleboard is an easy game to learn and anyone can quickly
become proficient at playing this game. Our games usually last
about an hour and we choose up different teams each time we play.
This allows us to keep the competition challenging and the games
interesting. We play for fun, but of course, everyone likes to win. No
one loses, we only have non-winners. We have a great core group of
residents who play regularly.
We are always looking for new players, so if anyone is interested
or has any questions or concerns, please contact me. Otherwise,
please show up and we will give you an introduction to shuffleboard
if you have not played before. See everyone on Monday and Saturday
mornings at 9 am at the new shuffleboard courts. ~ Marty Rotman,
