SOLERA DIAMOND VALLEY | APRIL 2023 11 By Clare Mendez, Resident I recently came across an article on toilet training a cat which was written in 1954. I thought I might find other blogs on the computer to support this theory and there is a lot to find. In fact, you can purchase the toilet trainer at several retailers including Walmart. Here's how it works: First, designate a bathroom exclusively for this training period, lest your company be offended by the look and smell of the litter and what might be in it. Place the litter box close to the toilet until your cat is comfortable using it there. Next, begin to raise the box off the floor on a stack of newspapers or some solid surface so it doesn't dump over when the cat steps on it. At the same time, begin to decrease the amount of litter in the box. The next part, I think, would take some skill on your part. Gradually move the box over the top of your toilet bowl. Once the cat is comfortable with the box up on your toilet seat, it's time to replace it with the "toilet trainer." You then add flushable litter to the outer edge. As your cat gets used to using the toilet, make the hole in the middle larger and larger until, with a magician's flair, you can take it away and your cat is doing his business directly into the toilet along with your guests. All in all, this transition should only take about a month the creator said. Although, as with all training, some pets can take longer to potty train than others and some may not catch on to this at all. You can also train your cat to flush the toilet, but it is not recommended as he may waste water wanting to watch it go down. I suggest you do your own research and watch the YouTube videos before you decide if toilet training your cat is for you. I was just very surprised it was so popular that there are so many "how to" videos and articles on the subject. Be aware, it has been reported by one pet owner that once his cat learned to do his business without a litter box, he started to defecate in other things such as his guitar case. I am just putting this out there in case any of our cat owners were interested in giving it a try. By Theresa Rossetti, Resident Where does all that data in The View come from? In particular, where do we get the information in the Calendar and how is it kept current? After the Management, Board, and Committee reservations, the rest comes from the contact people for our clubs and groups. This information is also noted in the last few pages with the description of the club or group. The only way to know where to go and what time to be there is for that information to be accurate. While the lag between data being sent to our publisher (the 5th of every month) and the delivery of The View on the first of the month is long, every effort should be made to keep this information as accurate as possible. Changes to schedules, such as different seasonal hours, a time of day or the days themselves being altered, etc., may be distributed via emails to current members, but should also be updated in The View. It's easy-peasy using The View Magazine Submissions Form, available online at soleradiamonvalley.com in the Forms tab, or in the flyer rack in the Lodge. As most of you know, we have had quite a few new neighbors move here in the last few years. In addition, many of us chose to try out different activities to see if that one is a good fit for their needs. Let's try to make sure they have the most accurate information. Toilet Training Your Cat It's Only As Correct As You Make It!
