Colony Couples 2Ball By Dennis Murphy, 951-461-0457 We had absolutely the best weather ever for our April event. Well, that may be a stretch. If five of 10 tournaments had been canceled because of weather, then I think I could say, "best weather ever." Our next contest is Thursday, May 4. Requirements for this event are simple — to be able to grasp a club! Being a member of the Men's or Women's Golf Club is not required. Just pick up some sticks and join us for a friendly late afternoon of fun (shotgun tee times vary, based upon the "setting of the sun"). We look forward to hearing from you. See ya on the links! Men's Golf By Sam Currie, 951-461-0801 With the weather gradually improving, we look forward to getting our playing schedule back on track. In fact, April saw the start of our Club Championship, one of our major tournaments of the year. I'll report on that in the next issue. Of course, the other major event coming up soon is our popular Pancake Breakfast, this year on June 3 in the Auditorium. See page 23 for all the details. However, our main story comes from fellow club golfer, Candido Pineiro, who writes: "I have a dream to be able one day to hit a golf ball into the creek on our golf course and just walk over and find it. Unfortunately, due to the years of neglect by past owners, we find the Colony Golf Course in serious need of help! A couple of months ago (with permission of those in charge), Mallie Donahoe and I decided to pitch in. We started by improving the playability of the course by removing fallen trees and branches that were interfering with play. We trimmed a few trees and bushes, wacked weeds here and there and stacked fallen debris in piles for future removal. Soon, by word of mouth, we had more volunteers join us, such as Alan Johnson, Glen Sailor, George Herrera and Rick Umsheild. And our special thanks go to Ron Brown and John Tighe for their assistance. We remove, sort, cut and stack what we can, with all work being conducted within each individual's physical abilities. It's a terrific workout twice a week (Tuesdays and Thursdays) and as Colony residents, we're just trying to improve our home course one fallen branch at a time!" We have a good variety of tournament formats lined up for this year, ranging from individual play to scrambles and shambles. All good fun! So why not join us and become a member of the CMGC.
