| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | MAY 2023 | 63 On March 19, about 30 Tennis Club members met at the North Clubhouse for our second Quarterly Meeting, and to celebrate St. Patrick's Day. The Executive Board, led by President Bill Hendra, provided for a nominal cost, a sumptuous corned-beef dinner with desserts. The Quarterly Meeting featured the distribution of Membership Directories for 2023. As for the last several years, Tennis Club membership continues to hover on or near 100. President Hendra emphasized the need to bring in new members and offer them occasions to take on an active role. The cost of annual Tennis Club membership remains at $10 per person. Our Membership Directories offer an outline of the Tennis Club calendar for the entire year. Now, in the month of May, the following list of events are planned. Each one is open to all Sun Lakes residents and is free unless otherwise indicated: Sat., May 6: 8 am - Skills Session; 8:30 am – Mixer (Mixed Doubles) Mon., May 8: 5 pm – Intermediate & Advanced Skills Session ($2 per participant) Mon., May 22: 5 pm – Mixer (Mixed Doubles) & Tacos on the Patio ($5 for members / $10 for non-members). In addition to this published schedule, Bill Hendra leads a Tuesday and Thursday 8 am, Drop-in Mixer on Courts #1, #2 & #3. This Mixer is open to men and women of all skill levels. A nominal fee is requested to cover the cost of tennis balls. Now, as we enter into the warmth of spring and summer, a Tennis Tip. Our very own tennis pro, Phil Hazelton, offers free advice, telling us that the flight of the tennis ball will tell you as a player what is not being done right. For example, serving: If the ball is going into the net, then you may be tossing way too far in from of you. If the ball is going deep, then you may be tossing it too far behind you. Also, ground strokes: If the ball is going into the net from the baseline, then your swing is going from high to low. The correction is to get your racquet lower than the ball at the start of your stroke. If the ball is going passed the baseline then you may be hitting up too much. If so, try a more level stroke. Essence of this Tip: Let the ball be your guide. It will at least give you a starting point on what to correct. And, always keep your eye on the ball, and the fun in your game. Tennis Combat Juggling Move over, Pickleball — Combat Juggling is the hot new sport and it's here at Sun Lakes. If you've never tried juggling or combat but have always wanted to, this club is for you. We meet Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays at 4 pm at South Clubhouse. We practice juggling from 4 to 4:30 pm then break off into groups of either one-against-one or four-against-four, depending on how many participants we have. The rules are simple: Juggle while walking menacingly toward your opponent(s). You are allowed to bark, shout insults (keep it clean!), or flirt — whatever you have to do to shake your opponents concentration. If they drop their pins, balls, or torches (depending on what we are using that day), you get a point. The person or team with the most points win. Losers buy dinner. Come on out and see what the sport that's sweeping the nation is all about! ~ Bozo the Clown
