We are pleased to continue introducing our EPAP Coordinators. Let's meet Carolyn Sawyer (photo inset). I am the District 4 EPAP Coordinator and the lead for the Companion Districts 1, 4, and 13. I have lived in Sun Lakes for 20 years. I moved to Sun Lakes from Washington in 2003 with my now late husband. I worked most of my career in HR. I have been a zone captain for 18 years and the EPAP Coordinator for the past three years. I truly enjoy doing both roles, as I have a built strong relationship with those in my District. I have also helped to train new coming EPAP Coordinators in other districts. Volunteers are so important and District 4 needs more volunteers for Zone Captains. Let's meet Gail Strachn: My name is Gail Strachn. We moved to Sun Lakes in 2003 and almost immediately, I was recruited to be the EPAP coordinator for District 1. I had some experience with the concept of "neighbor helping neighbor" in emergencies, as I was involved in various activities with the federal government. Aer the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989, I, along with many others, was tasked with setting up a response plan to identify casualties and building destruction at the federal level. With bridges out and roads impassable, I remained in San Francisco for two days, helping to evaluate the destruction in the city. I have also been involved in emergency information for the U.S. Forest Service on the Angeles National Forest. Knowing that fast response time and compilation of information is critical, I volunteered to serve as the EPAP Coordinator for the District. Aer 20 years in that role, District 1 is now seeking a new EPAP Coordinator! Please contact Barbara Elness, District 1 Delegate. In the past several months, our news headlines have included situations where Sheltering in Place was an order or a necessary reality. But what does "Shelter-in- Place" actually mean? Our Sun Lakes' EPAP Manual states, "Sheltering in Place is often a superior course of action, in an emergency situation, than it is to attempt to evacuate a community of size and complexity as Sun Lakes Country Club." Other resources state: Sheltering-in-place means finding a safe location indoors and staying there until you are given an "all clear" or told to evacuate. The purpose of sheltering-in-place is to safeguard occupants during an emergency outside the home or a building. When is Sheltering-in-Place the best option? According to the Sun Lakes EPAP Organization, FEMA, the Red Cross and other preparedness resources, sheltering-in-place is the best option if: *there is heavy smoke (as might be caused by an adjacent brush fire) *a toxic or hazardous waste spill *an active shooter or severe weather conditions Your Sun Lakes EPAP manual has this information and much more. If you do not have a manual, you can find it on the Sun Lakes CC website (Community/EPAP), pick up a copy from the Main Clubhouse front desk, or contact your District's Delegate, or EPAP. You may receive emergency updates by registering your cell phones with Riverside County at riversideca. gov/services.asp. 12 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | MAY 2023 | EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS SHELTER-IN-PLACE MEET TWO EPAP COORDINATORS
