18 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | MAY 2023 | Spring aeration of the greens and the healing process should be nearly complete, providing us once again with excellent greens conditions. While the inconvenience of the aeration process often causes golfer dismay, it is this maintenance that provides us with the outstanding greens we are accustomed to. The aeration plugs pulled from the greens are nutrient-rich sandy soil that is recycled to areas of need. These plugs are spread around the base of trees or perimeter of the course filling in bare spots to hopefully promote growth and retain soil moisture in these areas. Tree trimming has started on the golf course and will continue throughout the year. The many mature trees on both Sun Lakes courses require regular maintenance to ensure safety and golf playability. Trimming is done to thin out and remove bulk within the trees to avoid them from becoming top heavy. With the winds experienced in this area it is important to perform this regular maintenance to minimize safety issues and protect resident homes, since many of these trees line the perimeter of the golf course. The GAC and golf maintenance receive concerns and requests regarding tree maintenance and address these issues with the Master Board. Our priority is to address safety concerns and use the allotted tree- trimming budget in the most fiscally responsible manner to benefit the entire community. A number of golf activities are available for residents even if you are not a regular golfer. Pass Putters takes place on the third or fourth Friday of the month on the Championship putting green. This is an 18-hole putting only event run by the Pro Shop staff. Pitch, Putt, & Party takes place on first Tuesday of the month on the Executive Course. This involves pitching the ball a short distance (10-30 yards) onto the green and then putting out in a 9-hole event. Afterward, participants gather in the Sandwedge for drinks and snacks and awarding of prizes. Throughout the year, the Pro Shop runs Nine & Dine and Horse Race events on a rotating basis. These events are for the benefit of all residents of Sun Lakes outside the normal activities put on by the various golf clubs for their members. Golf Advisory Safety Advisory At the request of the Master Board, the Safety Advisory Committee submitted recommendations to address traffic safety in Sun Lakes. We want to do what we can to reduce speeding and distracted driving as much as possible. We all need to slow down and drive more safely. Also, the speeding patterns of guests and vendors are being monitored on the main arteries of Country Club, Riviera, and Birdie. A notification is given to guests and vendors whenever a gate pass is issued indicating speed limits and possible consequences of not adhering to our traffic rules here. There has been an increase in trespassing recently, due primarily to homelessness. Securitas has been working with Banning Police Department to quickly respond to any intrusions. Patrol has been instructed to do more perimeter checks on the outer parts of the community and to increase their visibility. Two arrests have been made since the beginning of March. Residents are encouraged to secure their homes and garages no matter what time of day it is and to call 911 if there is an emergency, followed up with a call to our security here. With the recent enforcement of Article 5.02, which addresses pets off-leash violations, there has been noticeable compliance by pet owners. Park grounds near Gate #3 and near Myrtle Beach have lower attendance with few violators. Securitas continues to work with EPAP Animal Rescue on locating and returning strays. Please remember to: 1. Drive safely and slow down 2. Report any suspicious activity to Banning PD, then to Securitas 3. Keep your pets leashed 4. Close your garage doors 5. Have a great day everyday Sun Lakes Committee Reports Lifestyles Magazine is the resource most residents turn to in order to find out what's going on in our community. At 80 pages, it includes articles from the Board, Delegate Assembly, FirstService, the restaurant, the golf pro, and all the advisory committees. Clubs and groups send articles and photos about their activities to Sunlakesnews@yahoo.com by the sixth of each month. The LAC meets on the seventh of each month, unless otherwise specified, to review and edit the articles submitted for each month's issue of the magazine. We meet with a Master Board liaison, Assistant General Manager, Jason Ewals, and the Recreation Director to keep updated about events coming up in our community. We also publish want ads and for sale items from residents at no cost, and hide a monthly joke for residents to find. Responses to our "Get the Joke" contest are put in a hat and a winner is randomly drawn, earning a restaurant gift card as a prize. Photographs taken by residents of areas within Sun Lakes are used on the magazine cover. If you're good at proofreading and are interested in joining us when we have an opening, please fill out a volunteer application form that you can get in the Main Clubhouse lobby. Lifestyles Advisory
