| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | MAY 2023 | 37 Our March meeting welcomed three new guests, Debbie who is inspired by creating portraits, Joe who enjoys acrylic, and Don who mainly works in water-based oils creating landscapes. We truly hope to have them back with their creations to share. Steve McGill, a master of pastel and acrylics, was our demonstrator. What a privilege it was to watch him demonstrate his skills in pastels. We witnessed as he turned a pale canvas into a golden scenery beyond belief. Steven provided not just tried and true techniques in rubbing and blending but also innovative new solutions. He shared that pastel painting is personal, because you work with your fingers to touch the canvas. Your pinkie is sometimes the best tool. So, this very personal touching of the canvas uniquely unites the artist directly to the image. Should you like information about upcoming classes by any artist, please contact Linda Graber at (951) 524-0136. The March Mini Art Show winners (at right, L-R) are Susan Van Loon, in third place with a delightful creation of two blue birds, Barbara Wells-Roberts in second place with a stunning vision of a man, and First Place goes to Judy Grant who presented a dreamy country cottage. Best of Show was awarded to Socorro Castellano, with an adorable orange tabby in perfect pose. The April 2 meeting was especially personal to me, as I was the presenter. My skill in repujado art began 20 years ago in Guanajuato, Mexico, where I first learned metal embossing at the Cultural Center. This type of art dates back to the 12th century, however it is believed that one of the first true examples of repujado is the Mask of Tutankhamun, who reigned from 1332 to 1323 BC. Today, metal embossing on gold plates would be astronomically expensive, so I use a thick aluminum type of metal. Remember to add May 21 at 1 pm in the South Clubhouse to your calendar. This is a must-attend, since there will be no meetings in June or July. This event will feature Joe Oakes, who is highly gifted in acrylics, using bright and vibrant colors. We will be back on Aug. 13. I sincerely invite everyone to visit and hopefully be part of The Art League as membership is welcome to all. First-time guests are highly encouraged. There is no charge or fee to guests. If you or anyone you know is interested in purchasing any of the art pieces in the gallery of the Sun Lakes main hallway, Linda Graber will be happy to assist.
