10 | SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JUNE 2023 | Last month's report was about "Charity Begins At Home" The Sun Lakes Charitable Trust distributes funds to the charities in the San Gorgonio Pass Area. It shows our concern for the needy in our community. What about the residents at Sun Lakes who need help? Perhaps not financial help, but help with their everyday living. We need a club or group who will volunteer to help our residents on a daily basis. There are residents who cannot drive anymore, not even their golf carts. They would appreciate being able to order food from our dining room but they cannot pick it up. The dining room could call a phone number and have a volunteer deliver the food to their home. The volunteer group could publish a phone number and a resident in need could call and ask for someone to put new batteries in their smoke alarms, or reset their sprinkler control box for the summer, or take them to a doctor's appointment on Highland Springs Road. Take a moment and check your Lifestyles Magazine. Toward the end of the magazine there is a list of 28 organizations we volunteer our help to every day. Where is the "Charity Begins At Home?" Reviewing the list, none of the organizations benefit our own people. A club or group dedicated to helping Sun Lakers would need to list things they will do and will not do. Helping around the home does not mean someone will fix plumbing or do electrical work, but they will change bulbs or batteries, or fix something small. There are residents who need someone to write checks for their bills so they can sign and mail them. The group might even have someone who will come to the home and plant a rose bush in the backyard. Obviously, it would be up to the residents in the volunteer group to set up parameters as to what they would and would not do based on the talents of the volunteers. We must keep in mind our community is getting older and some of our own need help now and then. This will not replace a caregiver or an industrial professional, but there is a need for someone who will do a minor chore to help a neighbor. If charity begins at home, what are we doing to help our own people? ~ Joe Formino, Chairman, District Delegate Assembly DISTRICT DELEGATE ASSEMBLY REPORT Helping Your Neighbors
