| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JUNE 2023 | 63 On April 22 starting at 8 am, several members of the Sun Lakes Tennis Club met on our courts to play a USTA (US Tennis Association) Men's 55+ doubles (7.0) contest against the Men's 55+ team from Redlands. The six players representing the Sun Lakes team are pictured above, from L-R: Don Zelmer, Paul Yanez, Chuck Beckman, Tom Whittington, John Hoak, and Ken Brown. The Sun Lakes team won all three lines. A number of fans showed up to cheer our team. Yeah! 55+ Men's USTA team members not engaged in the competition on the 22nd included: Bob Walter (Captain), Steve Van Loon, Casey Carr, David Gardner, Alan Lott, and Larry Martin. This team, as with other USTA teams formed in Sun Lakes, is not exclusive to Tennis Club members. Typically, both men's and women's USTA teams travel to compete within the Inland Empire and the desert cities. This USTA competition offers members of our Tennis Club the potential for competition on a sectional (Southern California), and potentially, national level. For example, in 2019 the Men's 65+ team traveled to Orlando, Florida in early 2020 to participate in national competition. Now back to the month of June Tennis Club news. Bill Hendra continues to offer Drop-in Mixers each Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 8 am. Further, the Tennis Club calendar for all club members and residents of Sun Lakes will be: • Sat., June 3 at 8 am - Skills Session; 8:30 am - Men & Women Mixer (free) • Sun., June 4 at 5:30 pm -Quarterly Meeting at the North Clubhouse; Potluck Salad Supper at 6 pm • Mon., June 12 at 5 pm - Intermediate & Advance Skills Clinic ($2 for balls); register in advance with a limit of 12 students • Mon., June 19 at 5 pm - Men & Women Mixer; BBQ on patio at 6:30 pm ($5 members/$10 non-members) Thanks to Phil Hazelton, our very own Club tennis pro, for another Tennis Tip that is all about courtesy on the courts. According to Phil, tennis has always been a sport that has emphasized manners dating back from the Old England Club to the present. Court manners include saying "Nice shot" when one is made. In social play, it is mannerly to give the opponent the benefit of the doubt on shots landing close to a line. For scheduled matches, the home team should provide new balls for the match. One's dress should always be in line with the standards of tennis. Further, bring a casual but somewhat competitive attitude that makes for enjoyable tennis for all. Remember to keep your eye on the ball and the fun in your game. Tennis
