By Lynn Williams Due to my husband's desire for one of his favorites, clam chowder in a bread bowl, we were off on another Thursday afternoon shuttle ride to Boudins in the San Marcos Grand Plaza. On the ride with us was a lady going to get her hair done, and a couple off to Albertson's with their shopping bags in tow. I also met a very friendly lady named Bernadette Rose who kindly agreed to share her "shuttle story." Bernadette has lived alone in OHCC for about eight years and was an active resident who played pickleball and drove wherever she wanted to go. About the time that COVID hit, Bernadette suffered an injury to her Achilles tendon, severely limiting her independent mobility. To make matters worse, about the time she was healing from the ankle injury she fell and broke her right wrist. Now Bernadette, being an outgoing person, was not happy to become a shut- in and she describes the shuttle as her "lifeline." She states "I could have used a food delivery app, but that does not help with the isolation problem. I wanted to get out." She did, and now takes the shuttle twice a week. "The shuttle riders have become friends, and Bob, the driver, is very helpful to all of us. Although I can drive for very short distances, this amenity is very important to me." Both Bernadette and I hope others will be inspired to try the shuttle. She also reminded me that bringing along assistive devices is not a problem. Does Your Neighbor Know about the Shuttle? 18 | OHCC LIVING | JUNE 2023 | Recreation News By Chris Bessey, Recreation Director June has arrived and so our summer fun begins. Water Volleyball hours change this month, players will be getting a later start to enjoy the warmth of the summer evenings. Wristbands are now required for all guests who visit and use the pool areas. Residents must sign their guests in at the Front Desk each day. Each day of the week there will be a different colored wristband that can be fastened to each swimmer's wrist. Along with the wristband a list of the pool rules will be given out. It will take time to get the membership used to this new procedure. We are hoping this will help avoid some of challenges we have faced, especially during the summer months. Community Patrol Services will monitor the area for compliance and please feel free to contact the Front Desk, if assistance is needed. Pool rules for the 2022 pool season: • Guests are required to register at the Front Desk and wear a wristband while in the pool area. • Shower before entering the pool and spa. • No bandages or skin lesions are permitted. • No diving. • Children's Hours are: Weekdays 11 am to 2 pm, weekends and holidays 11 am to 3 pm, children from five to 14 can swim during this time. Children are not allowed in the spa if they are under 14. • Pool Noodles, kickboards and devices for exercise purposes are allowed. No other floating objects or toys are permitted. • Food or beverages are not permitted, other than water in non- breakable containers. Bring a picnic to the Palm Court. • The Association will not be responsible for personal belongings left at the pool area or in the locker rooms. • Swim with a smile, be courteous, and enjoy the 84-degree water! There have been recent discussions regarding whether there will be plans to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Ocean Hills Country Club. The date of the original dedication was May 5, 1984, with the dedication address by General Alexander M. Haig, Jr. and Mayor Lawrence M. Bagley. With prior celebrations, a great deal of work went into the creation of a grand experience for all of those in attendance. The programs over the years have included: a spaghetti dinner, theater performances with champagne, photo books, a huge cake constructed in the parking lot including champagne, a health fair, a parade, an evening with Chubby Checker sponsored by OHSPA, and more cake and champagne. In the months ahead, great minds will come together to plan for a truly memorable occasion, in a fashion that this Association is accustomed to. The Fourth of July is on a Tuesday this year. The Recreation Department has plans for a parade in the morning, hot dog BBQ lunch, and music on the patios. Tickets will be made available beginning Thurs., June 1. With the Lanai project still in the works, we were reluctant to plan for a poolside party, as we were unsure if the space would be available. We came up with an informal but fun way to celebrate the day. To answer that age-old question… will there be fireworks? Not here but elsewhere, so check with the local municipalities for what they may have planned. The City of Carlsbad puts on annual fireworks that are visible, but our coastal fog typically rolls in to cloud the view. Happy Father's Day to all our dads, including all fur dads, we say thank you to our "Pawsome Daddies!" Food for thought and a good laugh: "By the time a man realizes that maybe his father was right, he usually has a son who thinks he's wrong." ~ Charles Wadsworth, classical pianist "I gave my father $100 and told him to buy himself something that will make his life easier. So, he went out and bought a present for my mother." ~ Rita Rudner, comedienne
