| OHCC LIVING | JUNE 2023 | 29 Matinee Club What are you doing on Father's Day? We are delighted to host comedian Alonzo Bodden for an encore performance at OHCC. Since his last performance here seven years ago, the man has been busy. Here are just a few highlights of his career and credentials: A regular panel member on NPR's Wait Wait… Don't Tell Me, and host of the Wait Wait Live Comedy Tour, Alonzo Bodden has been making audiences around the country laugh for more than 20 years. The title of his latest special produced by Helium Comedy and released on YouTube is Stupid Don't Get Tired where he points out stupidity on the micro and macro level in life. His stand-up specials, Heavy Lightweight and Who's Paying Attention is streaming on Amazon Prime Video. His first big comedy break came when he was on the "New Faces of Comedy" showcase at the Just for Laughs Festival in Montreal, but it was as the season three winner of NBC's Last Comic Standing, where Alonzo was first introduced to America. He's on all late-night TV shows with Jay Leno and Conan O'Brien, among others. You can see him in action on YouTube and this may be the item of most importance to many of our jazz-loving club members: Having performed on over 30 different Jazz Cruises, Alonzo is honored that some of the greatest musicians in the world including Marcus Miller, Robert Glasper, George Duke and Al Jarreau, to name a few, say "when Alonzo does improv comedy, it's jazz." Oh! Did I mention that Alonzo's comedy is topical, mostly calm and, for us, clean? I could go on and on, but I won't. See for yourself. Buy a (ticketless) ticket and spend an afternoon with him and Mal Hall, a nationally touring comedian who's a father to two young kids. The show will be Sun., June 18 at 2 pm in the Abravanel Hall. Doors open at 1:30 pm. Members are $20 and guests are $25.
