Woodchucks
Contrary to popular belief, not all Woodchucks make sawdust. In
our Club we have talented artists in a variety of media. For example,
have you ever noticed the wooden toy tractor displayed in the case
in the Clubhouse Galleria? Constructed by president Tom Murphy a
few years back, of note is the farmer operating it. Tiny, yet powerful
in his plaid shirt, bib overalls and straw hat, he is one of many figures
created by our Club Member Karen Long. She and her two sisters
have created miniatures of all sorts for over 25 years, selling their
work at Local Crafts Fairs.
Karen has been a resident since moving here all the way from
Fallbrook in 2015, where she farmed acres of avocados. Introduced
to the Woodchucks by Mike Thornton, her work quickly became in
demand by our Toy builders and Birdhouse makers.
Surprisingly, she doesn't use brushes for her intricate designs, but
improvises using toothpicks and a tiny metal stylus.
Even if you feel you don't have this level of talent, please consider
joining the Woodchucks, if only to get some Honey-Do's checked off
your list, or work on your own project that you've been dreaming
about for years. Better yet, consider joining us in building toys for
the children of Camp Pendleton, which has become a rich tradition
here for years. Forms are available at the Clubhouse desk.
