42 | OHCC LIVING | JUNE 2023 | It is already the coming of summer… walks and hikes ahead for us. With a membership interested in traveling on foot in the outdoors, we have a number of activities for this month of June. On June 2, we travel to Poway for a six-mile hike at Iron Mountain. On the 15th, another hike that is great to explore: Potato Chip Rock, again in the Poway area. During 2022 season, our membership met and decided to split our activities into Hikes or Walks. Every other week will be a hike, noting these outings are at times longer in distance, with ratings of moderate or difficult. Opposite to the hikes are the walks, many times on our beaches in San Diego County, but at inland sites as well. These "hikes" are usually three miles or slightly shorter, with ratings from moderate to easy. On June 9, we will have the first walk of the month, venturing to Bernardo Bay, a three-mile walk in Escondido. Late in the month we are scheduling our first beach walk, which will be announced on Internet site MEETUP, the site we use to announce and describe our walking/hiking activities. The Walkers and Hikers Club has over 250 members; the diversity of our walks and hikes is such that every member can be accommodated, in distance, in difficulty, and in schedule of dates. Hikes and Walks vary as to days of the week, some scheduled on Thursdays, some on Fridays. President Rich Halkyard often schedules Saturday hikes, which are exploratory on his part, but offer our members who still work weekdays the opportunity to hike as a group on Saturdays. Also, we walk around the OHCC loop every day at 8 am, two and a half miles in length. All residents are welcome to join us, membership in the club not required. We leave from the overflow parking lot each morning. All scheduled walks or hikes initially meet at the overflow parking lot at 8:30 a. get organized for the activity, and we head out in car pools. Walkers & Hikers Bocce Club More than 70 people met courtside for the second club meeting of the year. New topics were sign-ups for league play and the training classes in 2023. The first two Leagues have a planned start in June and last four weeks. Interest lists are open for Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced classes along with a Banking class. You must be a member to sign up for league or training classes. Beginners, members and non-members, are welcome Wednesday afternoons at 2 pm for an intro to playing Bocce and a chance to play and meet club members. The members stayed for lunch and the final round of the three-day tournament. Congratulations to Joan Comito and Jeff Powell for their winning performance. Joan scored a bocce on the first roll of the first game of the final match. There were 10 players who scored bocces during the tournament and Ric DuDeck earned his Fab-5 membership.
