48 | OHCC LIVING | JUNE 2023 | Racquet Club Action at the courts has picked up pace as we transition from spring into summer. Those 8 am morning slots which appealed to only a few hearty foursomes during our cold and wet winter are once again prized reservation times. Adjustments to the court schedule, including more time for the ever-growing intermediate cohort, ensure that residents can "come on down" to the courts — no fuss — seven mornings a week for resident-only drop-in play. Guests are not permitted to join in at morning drop-in, but on Friday evenings, Mixed Play drop-in welcomes players of all abilities with an informal "happy hour" atmosphere for playing and socializing. Guests are welcome and the front desk has loaner paddles to check out. The pickleball committee is experimenting with ways to get novice players comfortable coming to the courts once their beginner lessons have ended, so contact the Help Desk to learn more. Play & Stay the first Saturday of each month attracts more members to play pickleball, watch and talk, play corn hole, and enjoy the Juice Bar offerings which vary depending on who's hosting that day. Linda Cripe and Lori Smith created a Cinco de Mayo fiesta atmosphere with a plethora of goodies appealing to every taste. With a tip of our visors to her fierce determination to "live each moment," the 2023 annual women's pickleball tournament on June 15 – the Heidi James Inspiration Games – will honor the legacy of a favorite in the Racquet Club family. Stop by the courts to take in some of the action. Summer brings badminton back for evening play a couple times a month. Never played? No problem; lessons are available at the start of each evening for any interested OHCC residents. Beginner pickleball sessions are held monthly. The tennis courts are open and available and for those of you who think a smaller court might be more manageable, take a look at paddle tennis. Contact the Help Desk to "get on the list" for playing opportunities and free lessons. If there's an unused ball hopper in your garage or pickleball paddles and balls you no longer use, consider donating them to the Racquet Club for use in our classes. Contact our Help Desk at ohrchelp@gmail.com with your questions and requests. Sign up for free beginner courses – pickleball, paddle tennis and badminton! e Heidi James Inspiration Games are June 15 Lori Smith and Linda Cripe add some spice to Place & Stay!
