FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | JUNE 2023 41 Classic Film Group Join us to watch Yankee Doodle Dandy on June 27 and July 4 at 6 pm in The Lodge Theater. Yankee Doodle Dandy, which won the Oscar for Best Film, is a 1942 American biopic about George M. Cohan, his life and music. James Cagney captures the life of George M. Cohan, a man who produced, directed, wrote, composed the scores, and starred in his own musicals. Known in the decade before World War I as "the man who owned Broadway," he is considered the father of American musical comedy. The movie captures his early days as a child-star in his family's Vaudeville show through his eventual comeback. On June 29, 1936, Congress gave George M. Cohan the first Congressional Gold Medal for contributions to the American musical culture by authoring and popularizing patriotic songs in wartime. He was the first person in any artistic field selected for this honor, which previously had gone only to military and political leaders, philanthropists, scientists, inventors, and explorers for their special contributions to the United States. On May 1, 1940, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (Art Gilmore) presented George M. Cohan with the Congressional Gold Medal for his contributions to World War I morale, in particular with the songs "You're a Grand Old Flag" and "Over There." Special note: James Cagney became the first actor to win the Best Actor Academy Award for a musical performance. ~ Paul Plamondon, 4seasonsmoviegroup@gmail.com The club has screenings on the second and fourth Sundays of the month. We screen films you won't find at the big Cineplexes: documentaries, indie films, foreign films and other little gems that don't get wide release. There will only be one screening this month due to the Ampitheater schedule for June. Our screening for the month, on Sunday, June 11 at 6 pm, is the film What She Said: e Art of Pauline Kael (USA 2018, 1 hr.38 min., English). Here is a brief description from IMDb.com: "Pauline Kael, the New Yorker film critic for 25 years until the early 1990s, was a lightning rod of American culture. She waged a battle to be recognized and her opinions made her readers hate or love her. Her distinctive voice pioneered the art form, and was largely a result of stubborn determination, huge confidence, and a deep love of the arts. The movie also shows 20th-century movies through Pauline's eye, and shows Pauline's own life through moments of other movies. The filmmakers had complete access to the subject — through Gina James, Pauline's only child and the executor of her estate; friends and colleagues; and Pauline's personal archives. With over 30 new interviews, including David O. Russell, Quentin Tarantino, Camille Paglia, Molly Haskell, Alec Baldwin Greil Marcus, Paul Schrader, John Guare and Joe Morgenstern. Sarah Jessica Parker voices Pauline through her writing and letters." All of our screenings are followed by lively discussion about the film; we'd love to have you join us. The Lodge Theater has very limited seating, so if you're interested in our screenings, come early; we hope to see you there. Please note that all films announced are subject to availability.
