42 | LIFE IN SOLERA | JUNE 2023 | GOLF CLUB This month the Solera Golf Club will be holding their annual Gross and Net Club Championship. It's a two round event played on consecutive weeks. It's hoped that this year's event gives us the same excitement that played out last year when we had co- champions in both the Gross and Net flights. The Club's Match Play Championship finals were held on April 25th. Jim Parker the club's Tournament Director was in the same group and got to see the action first hand. Here's what he had to say, "The Match Play was nip-and-tuck. Marty Anderson and Bob Umeck were tied after the first nine holes. It went back and forth on the back side, but Bob pulled away with a great birdie on no. 17, then closed it out with a terrific up and down from the bunker on no.18. Congratulations, Bob Umeck, 2023 Solera Golf Club Match Play Champion!" May started out with a new team game called Shamble, a variation of a scramble and two-man best ball. The team of Dockery- Young-Salvador-Maciel cleaned everybody's clock with a score of -19. Kudos to Ed Young who shot a net 65. April's recap of winners: Stu Osborne was the winner with 4 skins that was played on the fourth, how appropriate; Umeck and Jim Karalun respectively won the individual low gross and net; two man Best Ball Winners were Young and John Dockery; and closing out the month with a four man two best ball game with the team of Tom Hamerla - Dave Sampson and Richard Crowe-Manuel "Mag" Magdaleno finishing in a first place tie. Here's a first, Armand Silva recently was playing in a group at Seven Hills Golf Club that included Robin "My Computer Guy" Minnear who's been servicing Solera for a decade and runs an ad in Life in Solera. On the 15th hole, Robin's tee shot was heading just off the right side of the fairway in the direction of a mower that was parked perpendicular to the fairway in the rough. When we got to the general area of where we thought his ball had landed, the mower operator called us over and pointed to Robin's golf ball which had bounced into the cab of the mower! The Solera Golf Club welcomes our newest member Ted Henderson. We encourage all members to seek out Ted before or after a round and introduce yourself. Now that we are heading into summer, we will begin playing at 7 pm on Sundays. If I don't already have your cell number, and you are interested in playing, please call Dorothy Hoffecker at (951) 217-5357 for more information. I can text you to let you know of any changes. SUNDAY EVENING BOCCE Robin Minnear was lucky that he got a free drop! Solera Golf Club 2023 Match Play Champion Bob Umeck. a
