FOUR SEASONS BREEZE | JULY 2023 67 Hey everyone! Frank Turner is my name and playing Bid Whist is my game. I love this game and thought I'd share this bit of history on Bid Whist that I found on Google. "The game originated in Turkey and was brought to the United States by slave traders from Europe. At that time, slaves were forbidden to learn to read and write. However, slave owners allowed card games like Bid Whist to be taught because they believed it could strengthen the math skills slaves would need to track cotton barrels and crops. After slavery ended, Bid Whist continued to gain popularity and became a favorite among African-American porters and waiters who worked cross country on train lines. As a result, Bid Whist terms such as "running a Boston" and "going all the way" became part of the game's lexicon." Bid Whist is a variation to the original game of Whist and it involves strategy, card counting, and careful communication with a partner. It is similar in play to Bridge and Spades. So, tell me … how would you bid and play these hands? I invite you to come out and share your responses and play with us! The Co-Ed Bid Whist group meets on Tuesdays from 6 to 8:30 pm in the RCN Building, Activity Room 3. We offer a satisfying game environment filled with skill, good cheer, good natured 'trash talking' and some great music. Win or lose, you will have a lot of fun and meet some great folks while playing Bid Whist. New players, whether new to the game or veterans, are always welcome! We look forward to seeing you at the tables. For more information, contact Frank Turner at (562) 922-9737. ~ Frank Turner Looking for a way to meet new friends? Join us on Fridays from 1 to 3 pm for Bunco. On the first and third Fridays, we play regular Bunco in the RCN. On the second, fourth, and fifth Fridays, we play Wacky Bunco in the Game Room at The Lodge. We've added a few twists to the scoring to keep you on your toes! Everyone is welcome! If you have any questions, contact Linda Supernaw at supernaw4@ sbcglobal.net or Cheryl Diego at kinderbear@msn.com. ~ Cheryl Diego Join us for an afternoon of friendship and fun while playing a game of Hand and Foot Canasta. We meet on Thursdays in the RCN Main Room from 12:45 to 4 pm. Table assignments are distributed at 12:45 pm. Each week you may play with someone different, giving you an opportunity to meet new friends and/or to visit with existing friends. We supply the cards, so just bring yourself and a desire to have fun. If you don't know how to play, we are always happy to set up a teaching table — by the end of the afternoon you will have mastered the game. Join us. ~ Pam Morales, pamelamorales26@gmail.com Three Thirteen Three Thirteen is a fun and fast-paced card game, played in 11 rounds. A variation of rummy, players meld using runs and sets of at least three cards. The first player to lay all cards down receives no points. Then the remaining players lay down their cards, on either the first player's cards or their own. Each round uses a progressive, new wild card, from 3 to Kings. The lowest score wins. Not a lot of rules to remember and it's quick and easy to learn. Everyone is welcome and we will always have a learner's table, if needed. We meet the first and third Tuesday of each month at 2 pm in The Lodge Game Room. Everyone is welcome to join us. If you have questions or want to be put on the group email list, contact Simone at simone@bissada.net. ~ Simone Bissada Bunco Co-ed Bid Whist Canasta Uptown Divas Bid Whist Uptown Divas Bid Whist Group meets on the first and third Fridays of every month from 2 to 4 pm in The Lodge Game Room. ~ Deborah Garner, kenyakiki@aol.com Frank Turner holding a winning hand Stan Freeman holding a winning hand
