America's experiment started almost 250 years ago and it is still going strong. I Hear America Singing (by Walt Whitman, "Leaves of Grass") I hear America singing, the varied carols I hear; ose of mechanics—each one singing his, as it should be, blithe and strong; e carpenter singing his, as he measures his plank or beam, e mason singing his, as he makes ready for work, or leaves off work; e boatman singing what belongs to him in his boat—the deckhand singing on the steamboat deck; e shoemaker singing as he sits on his bench—the hatter singing as he stands; e wood-cutter's song—the ploughboy's, on his way in the morning, or at the noon intermission, or at sundown; e delicious singing of the mother—or of the young wife at work—or of the girl sewing or washing— Each singing what belongs to her, and to none else; e day what belongs to the day— At night, the party of young fellows, robust, friendly, Singing, with open mouths, their strong melodious songs. I was in high school when I first came across Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass, which seems just a few years ago. Although the people workings don't pertain today, the poem pertains today. What wonderful memories those words evoke: Visiting family and old friends, exploring new places or past favorites, walking on the beach, taking a cruise, camping, cooking outside, and, of course, relaxing with a good book … is is how your Four Seasons Library can help make this vacation the best ever. Before heading to our library to choose materials, let's review how the library is organized. As you enter from e Lodge hallway, the hardcover fiction books occupy the le side of the room. Books are arranged in vertical columns le to right alphabetically filed by the authors' last name. e dates now stocked are 2014 – 2023. In the center section under the fiction books are shelves featuring some of our Four Seasons resident authors' books. Also along the bottom are the labeled double cabinets containing a wide selection of audio books/CDs from A to Z. Looking toward the right wall, you'll notice lovely cabinets under the wall mural. e tops of these cabinets conveniently contain the 2019 – 2023 paperback fiction books. ere are two sizes — standard/smaller and the larger trade editions which oen have larger print. Both are arranged alphabetically by author's last name. Beneath these are labeled cabinets with nonfiction books, including biographies/autobiographies, large print books, classics, health, and religious books. Open the doors, pull out the shelves, and check them out. NOTE: If you remove any materials anywhere to explore them, please put them in the boxes on the table in the back of the room. Residents sometimes try to re-shelve materials themselves, but that job belongs to the members of the Library Committee who know exactly where the materials go and should be filed. In addition, the library has current magazines on the rack in the back and copies of National Geographic on the back wall. ere are puzzles on the standing shelves behind the couch. Please be aware that all of the materials in the library have been donated by residents. It's a free lending library. Be sure to return any materials when you're finished with them so others can enjoy them on their vacations. e picture above is a sculpture found on Hilton Head Island where we recently vacationed. Remember, even if you can't physically travel anywhere this summer, you can still "get away" through books.
