| OHCC LIVING | JULY 2023 | 11 July, a month to celebrate AMERICA! July is the month that reminds us of the freedoms that we so oen take for granted. We have only to take a few moments to look back on those early years when America became a free and sovereign nation, when our country first opened its doors to immigrants from abroad. On the first day of January, eighteen ninety-two, they opened Ellis Island and let the people through. And the first to cross the threshold of that Isle of hope and tears, Was Annie Moore from Ireland who was all of fieen years. In her little bag she carried all her past and history, and her dreams for the future, in the land of liberty, Courage was her passport when her old world disappeared for there is no future in the past when you're fieen years. Isle of hope, Isle of tears, Isle of freedom, Isle of fears. When they closed down Ellis Island in nineteen fourth-three Seventeen million people had come for sanctuary. And in the springtime when I stepped onto those same piers I thought how it must have been when you're only fieen years. Isle of Hope, Isle of tears, Isle of FREEDOM, ~ Brendan Graham As we celebrate Independence Day, we are reminded of our rights to Free Speech and Free Press. Because of those original freedoms granted to all of us, we can read and listen to those who have opinions and creative works to share. Our OHCC Library has begun its new Author Series. Our first guest speaker will be Jac Jemc on Sun., July 30 in Abravanel Hall at 2 pm. She will share some of her five works of fiction, including e Grip of It and My Only Wife. She was a finalist for the PEN Robert W. Bingham Prize for Debut Fiction, and she was the winner of the Paula Anderson Book Award. She completed her M.F.A from the Art Institute of Chicago. She is presently teaching creative writing at the University of California, San Diego. Her teaching interests lie in fiction, experimental and speculative forms. Her most recent work, Empty eatre is a novel that centers on the lives of King Ludwig II of Bavaria and Empress Sisi of Austria (Queen of Hungary), in their pursuit of Connection and Beauty. ese cousins shared a passion for beauty and a stubborn refusal to submit to the roles imposed upon them. It has been described as "a wildly over-the-top" social satire that reimagines the mad misadventures of these royal cousins. Don't miss an opportunity to hear and listen to this highly celebrated author in the first of our Authors Series. e event is open to all residents and their guests.
