Hope to see you on the dance floor! ~ Lynn Murphy 14 | OHCC LIVING | JULY 2023 | Village Squares Our class members are now almost finished with SSD—Social Square Dancing. At the onslaught of COVID, all square dance clubs had to disband, since dancing required much physical contact, and this was deemed unsafe. During this hiatus, a newer system was devised labeled SSD. is had 50 calls, most from the basic section of square dance, but also incorporating some from mainstream. e idea was to get people dancing quicker, aer a few months, rather than the system that taught basic, mainstream, and plus, which required a year. Since then, many clubs, including ours, began introducing other calls from mainstream and plus. Our club now has about an hour and a quarter of class, and then we have an hour of plus workshop and plus dancing for those who have previously graduated from the former system and those who want to learn more. e fourth Wednesday of the month is our black and white dance. On those nights, we just dance without class, an hour for SSD and an hour for plus, although Mike will stop and workshop if needed. We are very proud of our students and of how much they have learned and improved. ey have kept our club alive and well and ready to continue dancing into the future! ~ Valerie ompson Doo Wop & Disco Dance What does it take to develop one of our shows? First, our director, Yvonne Romano, comes up with a theme for the performance and presents it to the troupe. en she, for tap and jazz, and our Hawaiian and belly dance teachers have to pick the songs and choreograph the individual numbers. e choreography is perfected as the dancers learn it, with changes oen being made almost up to the show. At the same time, the script for the performance is developed by Helen Sloan and the show chairs, Sonja Itson and Sharon Lair. Dialogue and songs are added, both to entertain the audience as well as to give the dancers time for costume changes. Sonja Itson and her helpers fine tune the music for each number, shortening it if needed, or adding a tag at the end to get the dancers off the stage. e costume chairs, Dana Sjodin and Allison Stewart, pore over catalogs, looking for the perfect costume for each number, one that carries all the different sizes that are needed. Aer the troupe approves the costume choices, accessories such as shoes, tights, and hats must be ordered. is has to be done months before the show to make sure everything is received on time. e show chairs also have to decide what decorations will be made in the hall, and stage sets have to be built. Our AV partners help us with the sound production and any background videos needed. en, in the month before the show, flyers are produced and sent out and ticket sales are done. Aer all this work, we will finally be ready to welcome our audience to the Wild Wild West! Why all this work? Because we love to perform, and share our love of dance with our neighbors and friends. It is the perfect time for you to join us in one or more of our classes. You can learn the elements of dance in a fun and easy atmosphere.
