Happy Fourth of July to all residents of Ocean Hills. We're looking forward to our Fourth of July activities and celebrating our independence together. ere is nothing better than a good old- fashioned BBQ on the Palm Court with hot dogs, apple pie, and the Musicstation for entertainment. e 84-degree pool is adjacent to our party, all children can swim from 11 am until 3 pm, and a local TV station has a fireworks show at 9 pm. Happy Birthday America! Wristbands are now being given to all guests that visit the pool areas. e cloudy weather has dampened attendance in the month of June but the numbers should pick up in July. Residents and their guests are receiving a copy of the pool rules upon registration at the front desk. We had some unexpected guests visit the pool when it was closed for maintenance in June. e couple was described as a male and female, the male being more attractive than the female, described as heavily endowed with feathers. Each year about this time we have the rare opportunity to host some our feathered friends. We have tried beach balls, flotation devices, and wood planks to help hasten their exit. Mother Nature is a force to reckon with. One year seven baby ducklings waddled along with mom and dad to enjoy the pool. It was a sight to see when those ducklings started diving into the jacuzzi and found out the water was a bit too hot, one duckling was quacking, "Mom, that dip just ruffled my feathers." An appointed ad hoc committee of the Community Services Committee (CSC), looking at the reservation process, has come up with new guidelines and helped the Recreation Department establish new policies and procedures to finish out the year and into 2024. Peak usage times, space requirements for certain activities, and number of participants attending were reviewed. With additional clubs forming, the lack of the Lanai, and ever- increasing attendance for all activity, it was a necessary to address the concerns raised. ese changes will go into effect immediately. With the reservation process for 2024 beginning in August, the committee moved quickly to accomplish the task. e ad hoc committee plans to review the process, as the year goes along, and make adjustments as necessary. Our Monday Pop-up Services continue and a local food truck has been added to our line-up. We have introduced "Signature Bagels and Deli," from Escondido. ey will be coming every other Monday from 7 am to 1 pm in the Overflow Parking Lot. eir menu includes bagels, coffee, and sandwiches. A resident wrote me aer their first visit here. "Can't tell you how pleased I am to see the new vendor food truck from Signature Bagel Deli. I have been traveling to their location in Escondido for over two years now to get my bagels. Having been brought up in New York I believe I am somewhat knowledgeable on a great N.Y. bagel. Crunchy on the outside and really chewy and delicious on the inside. ese are absolutely the best in the North County and probably in all of San Diego. Great hard-working people, also. anks for bringing them to OHCC." Now, this is only one person's opinion, but we sure appreciate the thumbs up. Come and check out their bagels! Last August, our movie night at the pool was a huge success and so many have asked that we have it again. e night was a beautiful August evening, it was so warm that we allowed for swimming, and it felt like the backdrop to a cruise ship. We are excited to bring this event back Fri., Aug. 4, on the Golf Course, presenting the movie Top Gun Maverick. We will try to squeeze in another popular film on the event calendar in October. So many of us remember the sparklers we lit on the Fourth of July. Does anyone remember the "Piccolo Pete?" It had a loud shrieking whistle. Fireworks stands were everywhere. Shasta soda was consumed only on the holiday. e celebration is not the same as it once was but we can make our own celebrations and create new traditions with family and friends. Words to think about: Just because you have the freedom to enter a hot dog eating contest, doesn't mean you should. See you in and around the Clubhouse! 18 | OHCC LIVING | JULY 2023 | Recreation News By Chris Bessey, Recreation Director
