36 | OHCC LIVING | JULY 2023 | In May, 12 of our members ventured into the Eastern Sierras for an "Old West" RV adventure. Just outside of Lone Pine and below majestic Mt Whitney lies the weird and otherworldly rock formations known as Alabama Hills. Here, our members visited scenic overlooks and trails where epic Western movies were frequently shot. In town, the Lone Pine Movie Museum is a nostalgic reminder of this movie era of our youth. Heading up to the quaint mountain town of Bishop, they camped at the county Fairgrounds, home to the annual "Mule Day Festival." Folks and mules come from all over the country to partake in 13 competitive mule events, presented in a large arena; including jumping, dressage, driving, roping and rodeo skills. Trick riding, racing and comedy acts presented in a Wild West Show atmosphere and a Ned Ledoux evening concert rounded out an active week. e Grand Parade, advertised as the "longest non-motorized parade in America," highlighted the marching of the 20 Team Borax mules, hauling two 10-ton ore wagons plus the water, feed and supplies wagon, just like the old days. rough her local connections, Wagon Master Linda Tindell was able to invite a well-known mule trainer and his mule to the campground for a private demonstration on training and controlling a mule plus some interesting bits about their behavior, history and usefulness in the development of the West. She was also able to arrange a private tour of local classic radio station KBIS which was quite interesting. e group toured scenic Rock Creek and Convict Lake and later dined at the rustic restaurant known as "Tom's Place". Having a small group of energetic travelers in beautiful mountain scenery with gorgeous weather made this an outstanding trip. e next trip is to Lake Tahoe Aug. 19-25 led by the Harvey's and the McBride's. ere are no membership meetings scheduled in July or August. ~ Paul Lange RV Club
