Woodchucks
e San Diego County Fair, ongoing at the Del Mar
Fairgrounds till July 5, is quite the spectacle! If you haven't
visited, your senses are in for a treat.
Besides the scary rides, livestock competition, live music,
and carnival-like atmosphere, there are plenty of 'food'
choices: giant turkey legs, deep-fried Oreos, deep-fried pot
stickers rolled in Hot Cheetos, and deep-fried s'mores, just to
name a few.
Of course, the Design in Wood exhibit caught my attention
immediately. Among the works of art featured are two
pieces made by our very own Woodchuck, Robert "Murph"
Haugen. His hand-built and accurate model of the Mayflower
won a coveted ird Place Award from the San Diego Fine
Woodworkers Assn. He also exhibited his detailed and
functional radio-controlled sailboat which towered over the
room at an impressive 6 1/2 feet tall.
Artisan furniture, sculptures, inlaid pieces, musical
instruments and carvings filled the large room; some for sale
at $30,000. Live demonstrations include violin making, wood
turning and carving, and model ship building.
All of these artists began at "Square One" which is what we
offer free of charge with your membership in the Woodchucks.
