Aer a short business meeting, we will learn from club member Mike Guillory. Mike's motto is "Living WELL Longer." He has studied neuroplasticity, the science of keeping brain cells vibrant and growing. Mike will share information on how learning new movements as you age can actually increase our number of brain cells and increase our brain power. His perspective is from a nutritional and exercise point of view. Mark your calendars! Member spotlight - Meet club member David Hirsch. David was born and raised in Chicago. He was a small business owner and over the years, has owned a variety of businesses ranging from auto parts to a meat distributor to a sign business. He and his wife Carol raised two kids in Chicago, then moved to Tucson, where they lived for 20 years. ey fulfilled their dream to live in southern California in 2016 when David sold his last business and they moved to OHCC. David's pool experience began in high school when everyone had to take one semester of swimming but he was never taught "how." But he always wanted to learn. Once he arrived in OHCC, a friend told him about the FREE swim lessons from the Swim Club. He took one lesson from our own Sue Tanner and he was hooked. Unfortunately, aer some surgery, David had difficulty turning his head to breathe while swimming. A swimmer friend suggested a snorkel and that did the trick! He started swimming laps and now swims about one and a half miles, three times a week. Aer his first year of swimming, David lost eight pounds and says his doctor was very pleased as his vitals were significantly better. David loves technology and uses a finger digital lap counter and a bone induction music player while swimming. Away from the pool, he calls himself a "yard artist" and creates different kinds of wind and solar-powered toys using wood, a 3D printer and stained glass. David and Carol have two adult children, and three teenage granddaughters. | OHCC LIVING | JULY 2023 | 45 Swim & Wellness Club Tai Chi originated in ancient China as one of its martial arts, the gentle one.
