| SUN LAKES LIFESTYLES | JULY 2023 | 63 Last month, several members of the Sun Lakes Tennis Club met on our courts to take part in a USTA (US Tennis Association) Women's 55+ doubles (7.0) contest against the Women's 55+ team from The Claremont Club, Claremont. This match was one of eight with four played in Sun Lakes and four played away within the Inland Empire. The six players representing the Sun Lakes team are pictured above: Cesarea Vazquez, Cathy Leogrande, Michele Walter (Captain), Tammy Pronenko, Kim Jensen, and Anita Chatigny. A number of fans showed up to cheer our team. Yay! 55+ Women's USTA team members representing Sun Lakes not engaged in the competition on the 29th included: Jane Whitney, Beverly Haller, Josie Beauchamp, Josephine Chow, and Ruby Villanueva. This team, as for other USTA teams formed in Sun Lakes, both men and women, is not exclusive to either Sun Lakes residents or Tennis Club members. Typically, both men's and women's USTA teams travel to compete within the Inland Empire and the Desert cities. USTA competition offers members of our Tennis Club the potential for competition on a sectional (Southern California), and potentially, a national level. For example, in 2019 the Men's 65+ team traveled to Orlando, Florida, and in early 2020, to participate in national competition. Now let's look at the month of July for Tennis Club activities. First, our President, Bill Hendra, continues to offer Drop-in Mixers each Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 8 am. These Mixers are gender neutral and open to all skill levels. Second, the Tennis Club Calendar for all club members and for all residents of Sun Lakes will be: Sat., July 1, 8 am - Skills Session; 8:30 am – Mixed Doubles Mixer Sat., July 8 and Sun., July 9: Wimbledon Finals (not SLTC organized) Mon., July 10 at 5 pm – Intermediate & Advanced Clinic/Mixer ($2) Mon., July 24 at 5 pm – Mixed Doubles Mixer followed by wine and cheese on the patio ($5 members/$10 non-members) Thanks again to Phil Hazelton, our very own Club Tennis Pro, for another Tennis Tip. This time it was all about 'practice that makes perfect.' It's an old tale, but a good one. To correct old mistakes, or create new improvements, we need to practice, practice, practice. Get a good hitting partner with the same intent as you and hit the courts. Practice a particular thing and make an extra effort like it being match point. If you don't have resources, educate yourself on what to practice. Then get with your local Pro for the best practice drills. As always, remember to keep your eye on the ball and the fun in your game. Tennis
