QUILTERS KNIT & CROCHET CLUB Solera Quilters are always looking for new techniques to apply to our quilting obsession. Recently, one of our members, Judy Bendel, showed us a new way to fold fabric to make adorable pot holders/trivets. We all took up the challenge and made these colorful pieces. All different, and all beautiful. We have more projects ahead which will broaden our knowledge and increase our enjoyment of this worthwhile hobby. Our Knit & Crochet Club has been active and our members are in and out with our group as life gets busy, health issues crop up, and May is always a time for family activities. We are wishing two of our members continued good wishes on their health issues and hope you will be back with us soon. The picture above is a newer member, Donna, who is crocheting this beautiful Afghan for her granddaughter. Other members have indicated they would like to learn knit techniques which we will be discussing. Check out the Clubhouse hobby window in July, our group members will have items in there. To join us, come visit us in the Clubhouse Craft room on Thursdays, 10 am to 12 noon. For info, contact Caryl Kay at (951) 524-0342. 34 | LIFE IN SOLERA | JULY 2023 | Basketry is an ancient art, practiced by many people and cultures. Traditional basket makers used readily available materials, such as sweet grass, pine needles, willow, and thin strips of ash or oak. Our instructor, Marsha, teaches Appalachian style basketry which is a functional form of basketry used for everyday activities. Thus, the basket names often reflect their functions, such as Market Basket, Egg Basket, Herb Drying Basket and others. Our instructor is Marsha Orr. Marsha made her first basket in 1987. She says it was a magical experience. The class was in a converted barn in rural upstate New York. Sheep were grazing in the pasture, classical music was playing, and herbal tea was brewing. Beautiful colored reed hung on batches from pegs. She was entranced by the ambiance and the process of weaving and was hooked on Basketry from then on. Marsha contemplated retirement after 17 years of teaching at CSU, Fullerton. She began teaching basketry through Fullerton Parks and Recreation's Community classes. She taught there for three years before retiring to Menifee. She says, "I find joy in teaching and practicing this ancient art and seeing the look of discovery and satisfaction as my students create their own basketry art." We will be holding our third basket weaving class on July 8 beginning at 8:30 am in the Arts & Crafts Room. The class is an all- day event. If you are interested in attending the class, please call Mary Anne Roadick at (909) 239-6698 for more details. Space is limited so call early to ensure you have a space. This class will be making a bread basket as shown in the picture. You will have the opportunity to choose the colors you like. BASKET WEAVING
