There has been an increasing problem with tree roots causing problems to fences, walkways, and block walls. The current homeowner is
responsible for the tree causing the problem. Homeowners/builders planted trees years ago between properties that have grown. The roots
have spread outward, rather then downward causing problems. We have clay soil and roots will not grow down unless they were planted
correctly. Trees need to be planted 5 feet from fences and walls (DRC Guidelines 6.4). A good practice in planting a tree would be to dig a hole
at least twice as wide as your container and twice as deep. Mixing in soil amendments when you plant will give the roots a chance to grow
downward. Deep watering of the tree (not the lawn sprinklers) encourages the roots to grow down.
If you have tree branches that are growing on your neighbor's property, your neighbor can trim the foliage that is on their property. If you
have tree roots causing the upheaval of fences or walls on your neighbor's property — you are responsible for the damage and repair, even if
you did not plant the tree. The current home owner is responsible for property violations. Check your trees that have been planted close to
fences and walls. Do what you need to do in order to not have a problem down the road.
