JULY MOV IES By eresa Rossetti, Resident Aer listening to the band One-2-Many on our back patio, I started thinking about the music we enjoyed when we were "off for the summer." So, in sort of chronological order, here are some memories to get your toes tapping for the warmer months. Ella Fitzgerald and Louie Armstrong gave us Summertime in 1935, in '58 Sam Cooke did the same while Eddie Cochran gave us Summertime Blues. Rock 'n roll took over in 1960 when Bryan Hyland informed us all about an Itsy-Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini. In '62, the Beach Boys took us on a Surfin' Safari. In '63, we were on Vacation with Connie Francis, Nat King Cole sang about ose Lazy Hazy Crazy Days of Summer, and we went through a Heatwave with Martha and the Vandellas. With the British Invasion of '64, Chad and Jeremy sang their Summer Song, but we were also Under the Boardwalk with e Driers. In the summer of '65, we heard I Got You Babe (Sonny and Cher) approximately every 12 minutes on our transistors, in '66 we spent a Summer in the City with the Lovin' Spoonful and enjoyed a Summer Wind with Frank Sinatra. 1967's summer is known as e Summer of Love when the hippies gathered at Haight-Ashbury. at summer we were listening to Groovin' by e Rascals and e Doors Light My Fire. In '68, Johnny Rivers gave us a lovely Summer Rain and in '69 we all probably agreed with Sly and the Family Stone that it was Hot Fun in e Summertime. Skipping to the '70s, we enjoyed In the Summertime by Mungo Jerry, Chicago's Saturday in the Park, Seals and Cross' Summer Breeze and Alice Cooper's Schools Out. at decade also gave us Summer by War, Hot Summer Night by Meat Loaf, the Ramones' Rockaway Beach and, last but certainly not least, Summer Nights from Olivia Newton John and John Travolta. In the '80s, new artists took over the airwaves, my beloved '60s music was now on the Oldies Channel. Even so, summer was on people's minds as the Go-Gos went on a different Vacation, the Motels gave us Suddenly Last Summer, Bananarama sang about a Cruel Summer, but Katrina and the Waves countered with Walking on Sunshine. To wrap things up, Don Henley gave us e Boys of Summer and Bryan Adams reminded us about e Summer of '69. Feel free to look up the videos online. I did and thoroughly enjoyed reminiscing! e picture inset is in honor of one of these songs. It was taken a long time ago at a place I'm familiar with. I'd never heard the song prior to researching this topic, proving "you learn something new every day!" The Songs of Summer
