Some grilled hot dogs and hamburgers, while others cooked and spooned out baked beans and potato salad. Weeks before the event, table centerpieces were put together. On the day of, table cloths, table settings and favors were strategically placed. Bill swept the whole Plaza and made sure the line of residents kept moving as they gathered their food plates. Why? Because 247 years ago neighbors worked together to declare their independence on the Fourth. Today we did the same: working together to celebrate the Fourth. Happy Birthday America! 330 tickets were sold for this celebration. e Social Committee would like to thank the co-chairs for this event, Mary Swinney and Linda Elliott, our emcee, Russ Brown, the cooks, Fred, Hank, Pat, and Steve, and the many volunteers who assisted in putting on this celebration, especially Karen, Cheryl, Bev, Debbie, and Mary who cleaned up and returned everything to the storage building on the 5th. Social Committee Welcome to August 2023. It still surprises me that August, the eighth month of each year, complete with 31 days, continues to be UN- celebrated and without a holiday of it's own. I'm also surprised that those "wise ones" that decide when working people need a three-day holiday from their jobs, just keep ignoring or overlooking poor anonymous August. August was named aer Augustus Caesar in 8 B.C., who was called Sextillia, which is Latin for "sixth" (sixth month of the year). e ancient Romans used a different calendar system and their year began in March and ended in February. In 1582, Pope Gregory adjusted the calendar to start in January. is calendar is known as Gregorian calendar, however it wasn't until 1752 that England and the American colonies finally adopted the Gregorian calendar. (Quoted from Wonder Sources.) So here we are, 271 years later, and we still can't get rid of changing the times on our clock twice a year nor give August a holiday to celebrate. So, I am declaring that I will do my part in honoring August and making it special. I plan to lighten up, do at least one fun thing every day, quit procrastinating about taking a trip north and visit friends, and indulge my joy of eating out. How about you?
