Yiddish
Club
Aer last month's program, we all enjoyed schmoozing, and
having some tasty nosh. Our next meeting will be held on Aug.
21, from 7 to 9 pm, in Abravanel Hall. All Ocean Hills residents
are welcome. See you all then!
Our Yiddish Club Board member, Carole Rochelle Brown
Silverman, recalls a cherished story of her great-grandmother
and namesake, as recounted below:
My Name Is Chaia Raizel: I was named for my Great-
Grandmother by my mother, Doris, and father, Meyer. My
mother was a child living in a small town in Poland. She would
accompany her grandmother most Friday mornings to ask the
people in town to donate food, clothing and other items for the
poor, so that they would have food and challah for the sabbath.
I have two letters that were written about Chaia Raizel which
will summarize what was said about her: "Chaia Raizel was a
one-woman charitable institution; she alone carried the entire
sorrows and heartbreak for the poor on her shoulders". At one
point, a mother and father died, leaving twin children alone
and unattended. She brought them to her humble home, and
took care of them, until the town Rabbi was able to make other
arrangements. He told the congregation how fortunate they were
to have such a holy woman in their midst!
Aer her death, many members of the community attended
her funeral. Her casket was carried to all the local temples and
prayers were recited on her behalf. She was a mother to her
children and also to the community! I am so proud to have been
named aer her!
