Lotto, Beano, or Bingo It seems quite a bit. Every month at OHCC we gather to play Bingo. Have you ever thought about the history of Bingo? Who invented Bingo, where did it start, how long ago. When I started to do some research, the answers were a little more complicated than I had anticipated. Here is a short history of Bingo. It all starts in Italy in the 1530s, with a game of chance named Lo Giuoco del Lotto de Italia. is extremely popular game used a board with nine squares across and three squares down, a total of 27 squares. By the 1800s the game has spread across Europe. As with anything popular, there were multiple spin-offs versions some with words and pictures. We now move to the United States in 1929 when Edwin S. Lowe, a New York traveling salesman went to a carnival as he passed through Georgia. ere he noticed people playing a game with hand-stamped cards and beans, the game was called Beano. It was yet another incarnation of Lotto that the game operator derived from a Lotto game he played in Europe. Back in New York, Lowe experimented with numerical combinations on the Beano boards and invited guests to play and test the game. Legend says that one excited guest yelled out Bingo instead of Beano, when he had the winning combination of numbers. e name was a keeper. With the help of a mathematician Lowe devised 6,000 numeric combinations on boards. Slowly Bingo gained popularity as fundraisers with churches and other organizations. By the late 1930s several companies started producing bingo sets. Today Bingo is played in many different formats, via paper cards, computers, in casino halls on laptops, on slot machines. Most use numbers, but some use pictures, or words. ere are the Disney version, the Marvel version, and the list goes on and on. However, one thing remains the same – the winner stands up and shouts BINGO! Not Lotto, not Beano… but BINGO! Join us for another fun filled evening of Bingo on Aug. 19. Doors open at 6:30 pm. Remember that Sept. 9 is our first aernoon game. We look forward to seeing you.
