Do you have the next Great American Novel, a la John Steinbeck, in your head and want to get it written and read? Or are your literary leanings more toward a Shakespearian sonnet? Possibly you yearn to write more in the counterculture vein of Jack Kerouac. Perhaps you are inspired by the likes of Arthur Conan Doyle to write a detective story. Maybe a collection of essays that would do justice to Emerson or Thoreau is just right for you, or perhaps something in the creepy and spooky genre of Edgar Allan Poe. How about song lyrics, poetry, or even a full-length play? Will the world be enthralled by your autobiography? Or best of all, have you written something that shows your unique literary vision? If this piques your interest, or if you just want to hear what others have written, you are a perfect fit for the Sun Lakes Creative Writers Club. We would love to have you share your work, be it a draft in progress or ready for publication. You will find a non-critical audience who would be happy to provide feedback and be inspired by your work. We meet in the Main Clubhouse Multipurpose Room from 1 to 3 pm the first Monday of each month, and from 3 to 5 pm in the same place the third Thursday of each month. That is why the meeting on Aug. 13 at 2 pm at the South Clubhouse will be a welcomed event. Our presenter for the day is Carol Cole who will be demonstrating her passion for abstract art. Abstract art is the imagination and thereafter creation on canvas or other source, that does not attempt to represent external reality or real life, but seeks to achieve its effect using shapes, forms, colors, and textures. This type of art uses visual language of shape, form, color, and line to create a composition which may exist with a degree of independence from visuals that we see in the real world or what is around us. Abstraction indicates a departure from reality, a separation in depiction, almost imagery. It allows our creativity to reach beyond the actual, with a broad and ample interpretation. Carole Cole provides classes right here in our beloved Sun Lakes for those interested. I would highly recommend you come see this incredibly inspiring artist to get a sneak peek at what her classes could lead you to create. Remember, all guests to our Art League meetings pay no fee at all. However, if you decide to join, our membership allows you special perks and so much more. Did you know that Robert De Niro Sr. was an American abstract expressionist artist best known as the father of the famous actor Robert De Niro? De Niro Sr. exhibited his paintings in museums and galleries across the United States of America. He also taught at several art schools including the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture. His paintings have sold from $2,000 to $4,000 at auction. His famed piece, Bar Scene (at right) may have sold for $5,000. The record price for this artist at auction is $536,241 for View from My Window.
