"There are no gardening mistakes, only
experiments." Janet Kilburn Phillips
Celebrating Independence Day, the Garden
Club's entry for the Fourth of July Cart Parade is
pictured at right with the decorating committee:
Elaine Perkins, Debbie Brown, Sue Volz, Janie Haughn, Sharon
Machado, and Debbie Brown. At our July Garden Club meeting,
Master Gardener and a judge for the National Garden Club Inc.'s
Master Flower Show, Pat Clayes, gave a PowerPoint presentation
featuring some remarkably clever and whimsical container mini-
gardens. She also demonstrated the 'how tos' of creating them. We're
excited to say that the speaker for our Aug. 9 meeting is a National
Forest Service Entomologist, Beth Kyre. She'll be here to tell us about
the health and care of our local National Forests. The Garden Club
has a vested interest in this topic since this is the 30-year anniversary
of our participation in the Penny Pines Program. Our club members
have donated more than $37,697 since 1993 which planted more
than 542 acres of forest with saplings. The monies were collected
from both small donations of change and dollar bills at monthly
meetings and from individual members who made larger donations
to the Plant a Tree or to plant an acre in someone's honor. If you'd
like to make such a commemorative gift to honor a person in your
life, you can find information and a printable form on the Garden
Club Page of the Sun Lakes website www.sunlakescc.com. Another
special project we are involved with is fruit harvesting. Joy Bailey
and her committee of Pickers will harvest fruit of trees within the
Sun Lakes community, and they need not belong to a Garden Club
member. They have recently picked cherry trees and delivered the
harvest to the Banning H.E.L.P. Inc. Center. Don't let your fruit go to
waste; just call Joy Bailey at (909) 856-4111.
Guests are always welcome to attend one of our meetings which
are on the second Wednesday of every month at 10 am in the Main
Clubhouse Ballroom (unless otherwise announced). Dates for the
next few months are Aug. 9, Sept. 13, Oct. 11. Dues are only $15 a
year. For more information, contact President Beverly Agner (951)
306-7379 and for membership questions, call Sherry Case (951)
533-3584 or Linda Powers (951) 769-3101.
