Our club played host to a enthusiastic gathering of Inland Empire picklers at the Charity Tournament in early June. The event was a resounding success for the Sun Lakes fund raiser as well as for the eager participants. Thanks to our club ambassadors who have networked with other pickleball venues. Over 120 players turned out representing the sport's hot spots in Beaumont, Cherry Valley, Yucaipa, Loma Linda and Redlands. Because this was planned to maximize the proceeds that would accrue to local charities, our club leaders emphasized participation over competition. Instead of the usual age brackets we had only over-65/under-66 with match-ups for mens, womens and mixed doubles. This provided twelve possible medal opportunities. Sun Lakes teams made a fine showing, winning five of those laurels. The two age categories put our players at a distinct disadvantage as the "under 66" bracket included some very young players! It was great fun to see such a wide range of competitors on our courts which are usually home to us "seniors." Beyond the paying customers who contributed to the financial success of the event (netting over $2,500 for the community), our club provided over a dozen volunteers who helped with registration, raffles and food sales. Local merchants donated to the cause and pickleball vendors provided paddles, balls and bags for the drawings. Club members can be very proud of the leadership our officers and others gave to make this tournament operate smoothly. Some of us have been part of USAPA-sanctioned tourneys that were not nearly as well-run. The visitors were impressed with the quality of our facility which provided a great showcase to the wider Pass Area resort communities. The investment our Master Board has made to establish the Sun Lakes Pickleball Pavilion is already paying dividends in its inaugural year. Kudos to all! We hope this event will inspire residents here in Sun Lakes to check out the game of pickleball. As the summer heats up, mid-day play will be less inviting. Fortunately, we are blessed with lighted courts to allow evening play. Various groups will still find times throughout the day to get together. Our club vice-president, Judy Luna, is the contact for anyone seeking the best times to get started. She may be reached at (949) 929-2390. We offer paddles to loan while you decide if the sport is for you. So come out and get involved in America's fastest-growing sport. See you on the courts!
