Solera CERT Cadre Hopefully everyone in Solera is having a terrific summer! During the last week of June, I was given the gift of sponsorship to attend the week-long 2023 National CERT Conference in San Francisco. A preparedness group known as "Listos California" paid for my tuition, travel, and lodging. The Listos California mission is to ensure every Californian, regardless of age, ability, income, or language, deserves culturally competent education to prepare for earthquakes, floods, and the immediate threat of wildfire. The program focuses on an eight-hour training session on preparedness for families. CERT practitioners from most of the Lower 48, Hawaii, the Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico were in attendance. International practitioners from Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Chile, and England were also there. Summer Safety Tips For Older Refined Adults As we enjoy a Midsummer Dream, here are some summer safety tips to keep you safe, healthy, and protected. Take Steps to Prevent Falls: • Wear close-toed shoes, not flip-flops and sandals. • Using a walking stick or cane to make getting around less strenuous. • Getting enough sleep so you can stay alert and aware of your surroundings. • Being aware of wet spots around pools, fountains, water parks, gyms, and bathrooms. • Watching for incline changes, holes, or other places where you can easily trip while outside. • Clearing debris or other obstacles from the yard, driveway, and walkways, especially after summer storms. • Staying indoors when feeling tired or weak and drinking water to avoid dizziness and confusion caused by dehydration. Stay Hydrated! The rule of thumb (and one of the most important summer safety tips) is to drink six to eight glasses of water daily. Remember, your body uses more energy when it is hot outside, so you need to give your body what it needs to continue to function at 100 percent with good hydration: • Use a reusable water bottle: It's more environmentally friendly than continuously purchasing bottled water and will keep your drink colder, longer. • Avoid coffee and caffeinated beverages that cause frequent bathroom trips: While coffee or tea won't necessarily dehydrate you, excessive urination will. • Avoid sports drinks: They're a good source of electrolytes, but the sugar they contain can negate the benefits of drinking these types of beverages. It's best to stick with water. ~ Ray C.
